Gas Prices and Our Trucks
you got ripped off if you paid $70K for your F-150. I mean, the F-150 is a great truck, but it ain't worth $70K, that's for damn sure.
i'm thinking about selling my 04 but not just because of gas prices. i am buying a house (it's in escrow right now) in Pasadena and if push comes to shove, I may have to sell the truck and buy a "more practical" vehicle. that means saving on gas and just paying cash for the little crap car so I don't have a monthly payment. we'll see. escrow closes in 2 weeks and I have all summer to really think about selling it...

bottom line is that I'd rather have my nice house in southern california than a truck. the house is an investment that comes with tax write offs and appreciates in value. the truck, as much as i love it, is a financial loser.

We have to pay 22% import taxes and on top of that 19% sales tax. A fully loaded F-150 will cost 47000 Euros, that equals $54000, add 19 % sales tax, total cost +- $64000.

Here is the Philippines, F150s cost about the same as U.S. prices.
My 2003 Lariat Screw 4x4 cost me $29,000 U.S. brand new in the Philippines. Plus fuel cost here are similar to about $2.25 gallon U.S., which matches California fuel prices.
It's kind of funny here in the Philippines, you see 1.6 Liter European diesels (Opels, Peugeots, etc), and gas guzzling Ford Expeditions, F150s, Tahoes, and Silverados. So you have both ends of the spectrum here when it comes to fuel efficiency.
We should be getting the all new F150 in late 2004 as a 2005 model, can't wait!!!

Don't Sell It!
Don't sell it, in the long run you will hate yourself..
I had a nice 01 XLT 4x4, loved it, started putting alot of un-reimbursed miles on it with my job.. Ended up making the mistake of trading it in..
I now have a very nice fun to drive Not-A-Truck nissan maxima which requires 93 octane or higher...
I've hated myself everytime it snows, and everytime I see one of you gents roll by with a sweet truck.. ESPECIALLY now that 2004 models are popping up everywhere.
I did some calcualtions a little while back, should have done this BEFORE trading in the truck.. You typically see upwards of 20cents difference in 87 to 93 octane fuel.. Add this detail together with some mileage for what I tend to drive, I got about 14-16 with the truck consistently, and about 24-26 with the nissan, for a 20k miles/yr average it turns out that I am only seeing about a $500/yr decrease in fuel costs by trading down.
Not to mention the incidental items, like my insurance is now more expensive ($100/yr or so) and expensive things like bike racks I needed to buy, whereas before I just threw stuff in the back..
<sigh>...
Anyway, when this thing is paid for it's gonig right to the ford lot.

If I want Shell (or any name brand) at a good neighborhood expect $2.30 for 87!
$53 for a tank of gas, damn, plus my WRX Turbo requires premium at $2.50 per gallon, ouch!!!
STOP PRICE GOUGING CALIFORNIA OIL COMPANIES!!!!!!!

It isn't the oil companies. It is a combination of your higher state taxes and wacky environmental lobbies/laws!

As for the WRX, all I can say is wow. People who pull up beside me see this dowdy looking Subaru and have no idea how fast it is.
I smoked this Hemi driver down a empty street block 2 nights ago (with my mountain bike on the roof rack no less) and when he pulled up next to me at the stoplight, he rolls down his window and jokingly says "does that thing have a Hemi?" Hilarious!

I've been working and living here in the Philippines for a little while, and it's been really great. Plus this F150 board is the coolest thing I've found on the internet so far.
Fords are very popular in the Philippines, especially Expeditions and F150s. The Ranger here is turbo diesel powered, with a couple of vehicles not sold in North America. As for now, we have to wait until October before the new F150 comes here as a 2005.

Thats enough of my ranting but just be thankfull your not in the UK, Tax and Duty sucks.
dcee: Sell your truck and move to Alabama - trucks, gas ($1.75/gal), beer, and property taxes ($450/year for a $300k house) are all cheaper!!!! Unfortunately the public school system and job market blow ... but, ya can't have every thang!
Gas may have come up a bit but it is hardly breakin' the bank enough to sell the truck.
Gas a year ago: $1.60 x 30 gallon tank = $48.00
Gas at Costco Today: $2.00 x 30 = $60.00
Difference: .40 cents or $12 dollars a tank
30 gallon fill up costs about 12 dollars MORE to fill up and I fill up 4 times a month.
It is costing me an extra $48 dollars a month to drive the truck.
I blow that every month on coffee and donuts!
But if gas goes up to $3.00....well, then that is about $168 dollars more per month and that would hurt quite a bit more but still not hard enough to make me sell the truck.
