fill the tank
set trip meter to zero

fill the tank
check trip meter
divide how many miles on the trip meter by how many gallons it took to fill.

Do that like 3 or more times and average the results.

My "Fuel Low" light goes on around 290 as well, but I've driven as much as 350 miles...so the light goes on with atleast 3 gallons left or so.

Man I have no idea what you guys are doing wrong but I get 16-20 all the time.

XL 4x4 regular cab 4.6. I drive it 70-90 everywhere (on the highway) I get to 400 miles and then fill up. I usually only get about 21 gallons in it. I only average by miles driven and gallons filled.

Might want to have Ford check that out. I am completely stock with 10K miles..

Good luck.

Yea I average 14-15 during the week 50/50 highway/town but i just got back from a 315 mile trip and checked my mileage and got 20.9 averaging 65-85 mph, also i always drive about 300 miles before i refill and I have never once had the low fuel light come on, it always takes about 20 gallons to fill back up! just so ya know!

Last Saturday I purchased an 04 2wd scab 4.6 w/3.55 ring & pinion and on my very first tank with a trip to Houston to get a set of takeoff XLT wheels and tires, averaging 75 - 85 and a lot of city driving, I got 17.1 mpg. Before I left, I filled the tank to the rim, set the trip odometer and I drove 440 miles on the tank and refilled it to the rim with 25.6 gallons of fuel and the low fuel light never came on. Maybe my low fuel light doesn't work.

I was really suprised with the gas mileage, but I seem to be driving it harder now that it has 1k miles on it and I'm sure the gas mileage will decline as my foot gets heavier.

17 mpg

I have an 04 SCab, 4.6L, 4x2, Expedition take-off wheels with 270/70-17, 3.55 gears, and have averaged high 17 mpg's with about 3,000 miles on the odo.

4x4 04 supercrew 5.4L 3.55's 255/70/17 tires with 40 psi

16 mpg 50/50 city/highway, never over 70.

18 mpg on trips to the cabin, 100 miles at 75-80mph, another 80 miles at 60 mph

I drive with a rather mellow acceleration. I don't try to keep up with passenger cars out of the hole. Now if a Z71 or Dodge are in the other lane, then I give it a little more pedal.

**I get 1 mpg better all around than my 02 4x4 Scab 5.4L did.

Thumbs up

4.6 XLT Super Crew with rolnlock bed cover closed.
All flat Florida highway trips.
80 - 85mph = 14/15mpg
60 - 65mph = 19/20mpg
Empty or with 1000lbs load doesnt seem to matter much at all. Put it down to being so boringly flat.

As far as I am concerned, the truck is fantastic in every way. 28,000 miles since Feb 04. No vibes at all. Do have the odd clicking noise in the steering somewhere from time to time.
Only gripe is that the drivers captains chair is a bit hard after 4 - 5 hours.

Love me XLT.

I've owned over 100 cars, trucks, suv's etc. That's in 36 years of driving. I have never owned anything that had as wide a variance of milage as my 2004 4.6 Regular cab, short bed.

Drive it slower than an old lady around town (all stop and go) and it delivers a consistant 13. Drive it at full blast on the open road and it gets 21.3. The secret is in the weight. The truck is so heavy that even babying it, it gets lousy milage if you have to keep starting from stoplights.
The gearing and powercurve kick in on the highway and it gets milage like a sedan. The people getting higher town milage are probably in areas where you can get above 2nd-3rd gear in their towns.
I find if I 'hop' the freeways around our area, thus getting it up to reasonable speeds,my 'town' milage gets up around 14.7. This actually gets better milage, but is offset by haveing to go more miles between points, at least where I drive.
I have added Superchips, hard tonneau, K&N, Magnaflow. My milage on the highway went from 17 to 21. My around town has dropped from 14 to 13. Yet it doesn't feel as if I shifted the powercurve higher.
Bottom line, Truck is too heavy for good stop and go driving, but if your commuting over a highway/freeway then this is the truck for you.
Chris

P.S. The toys add so much fun to the way the truck drives, my wife isn't complaining about the toys cost.

I have just actually watched my last two tanks for around town mileage, 1st was 18, 2nd was 17. I never really paid attention just thought I was getting lousy mileage but when my friend HEMI owner said he was getting 12 I had to check. I am going to watch it till my new truck comes in.

XLT 4.6L no mods
