What's the flashing LED on my dash?

I've noticed a red LED that flashes every few seconds when my truck is locked (assuming it's only when it's locked). I looked out my window and I saw it flashing. I like it because it would make a 'bad guy' think it's an alarm. There's no factory alarm I know of...so what is it's purpose?

It's there to signal that the Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) is activated. There should be information about it in the owners manual.
I think it was designed to be so visible at night in order to warn potential thieves that an anti-theft (albeit passive) system is present.

Some others have suggested it's dual purpose of also being the auto-headlight sensor.

Yep, it's also the auto-headlight sensor. Tested it the other day by tossing my wallet over it and the lights came of after a short bit.

Unrelated, but....

I paid my insurance the other day. I just got the truck a few days ago. For full coverage and fairly low deductables (250 comprehensive and 500 collision) the cost for 6 months is $364! :D (I'm 34 and male by the way) That's much cheaper than I thought it would be! They said (State Farm) that the safety features, crash rating and anti-theft stuff helped a lot.

MumfordF150 Mar 22, 2004 01:23 PM

That sucks

I am a 33 year old male and have had state farm since 1986. I have NEVER had a speeding ticket or a claim against state farm. My insurance is dang 1200 / year for my new F150.

My best guess is that becuase I live in the city of Atlanta it is a lot higher than the country folks pay.

I am 22 with a perfect record and my insurance is about the same (~1300/year) I am hoping this is going to be going down since it makes the end of the month that much more painful. I am with Geico.

Crap! That's up there. Don't know if this factors in more on the savings, but I'm married and have 2 other cars with them. I know I get a multi-car discount, but it can't be THAT much. Never claimed any repairs with them either (in the many years I've been with them. I don't know why it's so cheap for me, but I took it over and they looked at it, so they know what it is for sure.

I'm 41, clean record, have full overage and I'm paying about a grand a year. I have LoJack installed. Apparently that brought the rates down a bit. The F150 is the #1 stolen pickup in my county and state.

cptnboom Mar 22, 2004 02:35 PM

It has so much to do with where you live...in Colorado I pay only 631 per year, but get certain discounts. I am young, 24, and also have a clean record...I think certain salesmen will give you different deals too...I am moving to Michigan next week, anyone know how that state compares in insurance rates to others?

Well crap

I am married too and have both cars with State Farm. I just called them and they are like, you live in Fulton county the highest crime county in GA.

Well it costs to be a ATL thug :-)

oh well, thank god for great city salaries too :-)

plus the DINK (Dual Incomes No Kids) works great... :-)

TUFF FORD Mar 22, 2004 04:15 PM

All you State Farmer's

Thanks for paying my salary!

There are several discounts that are available that both of you had mentioned. Accident Free, Multi-Line, Multi-Car, etc. If you are young enough, there is a good student discount with a B+ average, or better.

Unfortunately, it is also based on where you live, how far you drive to/from work, how many miles you put on your vehicle/year, etc.

State Farm has a REALLY broad policy. Some of these fly-by-night companies don't, that's why they are cheaper. It's worth the extra dough if you ask me...then again, nobody did.

:beers:

your province also has government run insurance.

You would probably be 25% higher than that in Ontario.
