Does the K&N filter really give you better performance?

I have had one in my last three trucks encluding my new 04 along with my wifes Taurus, and have not noticed any difference in performance or gas mileage. The only reason I buy one is you can clean them and reuse them.

I have had a K&N in both of my trucks and love them. I had one in my 97 F-150 with the 4.2L V-6 and on a back road straight stretch I would go 68 with a bed cover and stock air filter. I removed the bed cover and added the K&N filter and ran 72 on the same stretch. I repeated these runs several times each way and that was the average. As far as gas milage I never check.

How much did your bed cover weigh?
