Headliner Removal (SCab)

Anyone removed the headliner yet?
I couldn't even get started...first I looked at the rear dome light at the end of the overhead rails...lense can't be removed, if I pull on the housing it feels like I'm going to break it.

Then I looked at the clothes hooks, popped off the "screw" cover on them only to find, NO SCREWS. Looks like you need a special tool to release them.

Talk about frustrating, I can't even get started on it.

Why am I removing the headliner you ask? For a ham antenna, want to put it right in the middle of the roof, between the fore and aft center roof groove.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well my dealership service dept has no clue how to remove it, they'll research it and do it for $150.
Ford customer service could give me no info.
The service manual has no info on it.
WTF?

I think I can get to the electrical supply to the dome light, I think I'll give it 110V and kill the bulb so they have to remove it for warranty replacement of the bulb.

Anyone with a blown bulb in this dome light will need this info, or have to take it in for service for a freakin blown bulb.

Rediculous.
This is very dissappointing dealing with Ford on this issue.

Rear dome light in Scab is held on with spring clips, just pull down, HARD (it clips into plastic so I avoided pulling hard since it felt like it would break, nope).
Reinstallation is not easy, you gotta push REAL HARD.

The clothes hooks look like they need a special tool for removal, but I may be able to get the antenna connector to where it needs to be from the dome light opening, and then fish the wire, avoiding the need to totally remove the headliner.

Wish me luck

my company designed the overhead system.
so i'm pretty sure I can help

i will confirm the hardware but it should be a mix of phillips and torx T15's.

i will try to take some pics of the overhead systems (out of the vehicle) can't promise anything tomorrow, busy day.... but the system is designed to be removed and re-isntalled, so dont' wreck anything yet

I downloaded the PDF file off of the motorcraft.com technical page. I would recommed doing that for everyone. For $10 or something you get 3 days access to the service manual and wiring diagrams. You can download the PDF files. I have the one for the Headliner removal. If you want me to email it to you I can.

let me know

Please, thank you!

I would love a copy of the headliner removal too. I'll need it when I install my lightbar, that headliner has gotta come down for that, the overhead rail with it. CometFlash@comcast.net

I successfully took out my headliner (Scab) today.

Remove:
Sun visors
Clothes hooks (insert flat head screwdriver and twist 90deg to release)
Cover for suicide door latches
Remove A pillar covers and let hang in place, no need to totally remove (pop off bolt covers with small screwdriver and remove bolts)
Remove rear (C?) pillar covers (remove upper bolt cover and unbolt, unbolt top seat belt bolts, pull covers to remove enough to get headliner out)
Remove any overhead storage bins
Remove dome lights (pull down hard to remove)
Unscrew overhead rails (they are permantently attached to headliner but they do slide, no not pull them down)
Remove two rear push in retainers (this was a bitch without the proper tool).
Move rearview mirror out of the way

Now for the moment of truth, slide the overhead rails forward to release the headliner (note, to reinstall put the rails back to their original position and just push up, near impossible to slide them back).

That's about all I can think off, oh, to reinstall the dome lights you have to push, hard, those clips are very tight.

I drilled through the center of the roof for an antenna, I sould have put a box under there to collect the metal shavings, fortunately a magnet came in very hany to collect them from the top of the headliner (I didn't completely remove it from the truck, I let it rest on the tops of the seats and the rear pillars.

I hope that helps someone, now to install my accessory battery

Question Bringing an old post back to life!

Hey Perceptron (or anyone), What does the sliding of the rails forward actually do? I had my liner down now I have this unwanted sound. When I dropped the liner I didn't know about sliding the rails forward or sliding them back before the install. I didn't have any problems droppiong the liner so I'm assuming I didn't damage anything

Thx for any info........Dee

Perceptrons' comment........"Now for the moment of truth, slide the overhead rails forward to release the headliner (note, to reinstall put the rails back to their original position and just push up, near impossible to slide them back)."

If you still had that PFD on how to remove the headliner I'de love to look at it. I'm going to take my headliner down this weekend and repair my sunroof rails finally. If you have that laying around i'de be appreciative.

Thanks,

Don
