Max Trailer Towing Conservative?

According to the "Sales and Marketing Guide", a '04 Supercrew 4wd with 18" wheels has a max towing rating of 8700 lbs. For example, this is actually less than a 4wd Avalanche which has a towing rating of 8800lbs. The Chevy would have 17" wheels and does not offer 18" wheels. With 17" wheels the Ford would tow more at 9200lb. But given most SCrews will have 18" wheels (every Lariat and most FX4's) this is kind of surprising. When Ford ran the comparisons in Texas for the media, the resounding opinion was that the new F-150 handled the heavy trailer with esae compared to the Chevys (& others). While I know most folks feel the auto makers pull the max trailer ratings out of their azz, it should be noted based on the above info that Ford is more conservative that the rest!
(It does botehr me though that my bud with teh Avalanche can brag that he can leagally tow more?!)

Ford raised the maximum tow rating by 500 lbs after the Sales Guide and Brochures were published. I would assume that all of the tow ratings for the F-150 went up by the same amount. Not that anyone needs to tow either 8700 or 9200 lbs regually with a F-150 anyway

Its rather interesting in regards to output.......Ford does seem to underate thier cars quite a bit. The Cobra is said to be 390 hp and 390 torque.........however when dynoed its 425 hp and 420 tq

What bothers me it that a Marauder with 450 hp and 435 torque which weighs roughly 800 lbs more can outrun a cobra.

The Cobra does 0-60 in 4.7 seconds the Marauder in 4 flat.

I'm curious if the Modular Cammer 5.0L is underrated as well. Its doing 425 hp and 390 tq stock. If I could get a new 2003-4 Town Car drop the new 5.0L in and add a supercharger and supercooler and some other works. I would be spanking SVT's and Vipers......and maybe the Vettes. I want a sleeper Town Car!!!!!!!!!

Although I have a screw FX4 with 18" wheels ordered, I would not tow 8700 pounds with it. If you need to tow that much you need a F-250.

I just towed my 4x10 utility trailer with 1,200lbs of concrete and I hardly felt it behind me. The manual said to wait till 500 miles before towing, I waited until 1,417 miles for this first tow. This truck is sweet...
