Recently, when I have been fueling up my 1998 F150, the gas pump shuts off every 2-3 seconds unless I hold the pump and fill the tank very slowly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

The tank is vented to the charcoal canister and then to the engine when the engine is running. The vent is not working properly would be my guess. The tank probably has a check valve in the vent. That check valve was a generic issue with my 2005 Dodge Magnum and Chrysler warranted the tank for life and I got a new tank installed. Prior to the new tank, I couldn't fill the tank at full speed either.

 

It can also be the pump nozzles. I know when the pump nozzles at the gas station are worn out, when filling my Dakota, it will do that. Only the newest nozzles will work the best.

I've also found that if you pull the nozzle out about 1/2 way and fill it, the pump won't shut off until it's full.

I've had it happen in my F150 occasionally as well when it was practically brand new.

 

They are even worse with those new capless fuel door cars.

In the old days, you took your gas cap and wedged it into the pump handle so that you did not have to stand there squeezing the pump handle while you smoked your cigarette.
