Temp sending unit

I'm helping a friend work on his 1997 4.6 , temp gage doesn't work . Diagrams show two sending / sensor units . It has 2 connectors but only one sensor ? Can read engine temp with code reader , could this be an engine swap or we over looking a sensor ? Thanks

I believe there are 2 sensors - one for the gauge and one for the PCM.

Sensor

Looked all over , looking at wire it should be only a couple of inch’s away . There’s only one . That and huge scratch under hood makes me think motor has been swapped . I can add to wires if I can find where it is .

2nd try

took off alternator , no second sensor ? I’m lost

The sensor is threaded into the front of the intake manifold coolant crossover on the passenger side across from the thermostat/upper radiator hose connection.

If I unplug this one computer readout goes away , still don’t see a second sensor

Okay sorry for the confusion bud. I have a 97 and 99 4.6 and got them confused, both trucks are different.

I fianlly got off my lazy ass and walked over to the 97 and you are correct. Either that truck had an engine swap or the intake manifold replaced.

Here is what it looks like on my 97. The two sensors are side by side

It’s factory , we have concluded the engine is a transplant, now to find the location of sensor on this one ?

Ford stopped using two sensors in 1999 so you won't find another sensor.

You will need to add the second sensor to the cooling system yourself if you want the gauge to work again.

It's also not a coolant temp sensor, it's a cylinder head temp sensor on the 99+.

Thanks
