Engine bogging issue.

This question may have been answered in previous threads, but I literally just joined and am having an issue.
I can be riding along in my 02 F150 5.4L 4×4 with no issues, accelerates fine. I bury the throttle to pass and engine bogs out. Back out the pedal, things level out, and I can press down enough for passing gear to kick in and make the pass if room/traffic allows.
In the last 6 months I have replaced air filter, MAF sensor, both upstream 02 sensors. Had PO171 and 174 codes for a while, but new MAF fixed that issue.
Have heard running lean for a while will destroy plugs....any truth. Any help will be helpful

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

Joe Kearce 05-16-2018 10:05 AM

Not yet. Was looking for ideas or suggestions to sorta guide in the direction.

Pull the plugs and look at them. Change the fuel filter and test the fuel pressure.

What spark plugs do y'all suggest I run? I know Motorcraft is the brand, just looking for something other than plain old platinum

ManualF150 05-17-2018 01:21 PM

Why? Just use the Motorcrafts.

Motorcraft SP479. No antiseize, torque to 28 ft/lb.

Sounds much like a lack of fuel pressure.
1. Wide open throttle does not use OX sensor inputs. The computer switches to rich fixed fuel tables at about 7/8 throttle positions.
2. Codes 171/174 richens fuel by moving fuel tables rich. This is what sets the codes.
.
The motor needs more fuel under all these conditions.
Good luck.

The auto parts stores close to me have fuel pressure gauges for loan and it is easy to check the pressure at the shrader valve on the fuel rail.

sounds just like my post, my truck is slow with no check engine light (old ladies leave me at stop lights) but After a year of holding it off and still no cel I’ve cut it down to the catalytic converter being bad.. not 100% sure but my truck runs fine just struggles to gain speed and suffers in gas mileage because of it l. If you were having a fuel pressure problem it would throw those p0171 and p0174 all the time and more than likely some random misfires.. just my opinion tho I’m not a professional just a guy going through similar things

Bought a 2008 f-150 4.6L. limp mode problem

Just bought a 08 with the 4.6L. the truck drives great, but one day I decided to "see what it can do" so I laid into the pedal and within seconds the check engine light came on, lost almost all power and had to pull off the road. Turned the truck off, waited about a minute and started it back up. Engine light went off and truck is back to running like it did before. Tried heavy accelerating again to check it out and it tried to go limp again. What would cause it to go limp Everytime under hard acceleration?
im new to the forum...I'm sure there is a post somewhere here that has been gone over, but I've been looking and can't find my exact issue. Thanks for any kind of help and suggestions

First thing to do is read the codes.
