Are Exhaust systems the same between engines/models?

I have a 2000 4.6L extended cab with a massive hole in my muffler. As we probably know the muffler itself does not have a flange at the muffler so the entire pipe from headers back needs to be replaced if youre using like for like.

With the 4.6L can i use the exhaust off a 5.4? Does crew cab VS extended cab make a difference?

I'm looking for the cheapest possible option as i will be buying a new vehicle in the next few months, but if i want to sell the truck i should probably address the sound issue.. lol

Get a universal muffler that's the right length and configuration, cut the old one out and weld the new one in. A muffler shop may be able to do this at a reasonable cost.

If you replace the muffler, you should get the rubber holders.

As glc said, a muffler shop can most likely do this for you at a good price.

Wait, what? God created welders to solve this problem for us. Go to the muffler shop and have them weld in a new muffler. It's easy. You can go on Saturday morning, and walk up the block to the diner for breakfast, then walk back and your truck will be ready.

Manual150 and glc both suggest that a muffler shop may be able to weld a muffler in for you. They ABSOLUTELY CAN weld the muffler in, and they can do it cheaper than you can do it yourself. They have a muffler hanging on the rack in the back room that will do what you need. You don't have to look for anything. Just Google Map MUFFLER SHOP in your town, or whatever town you are in, and let the map take you there.

Plus it supports local businesses.

No, I didn't say that a muffler shop "may" be able to weld in a muffler - I said they "may" be able to do it at a reasonable cost.

Thanks guys yea going with a used option probably wasnt a good idea.

After getting a few quotes here and there for around $340 for muffler and repair i went to a muffler specific shop (Muffler man on Kingsway in Burnaby for those in Vancouver) and he did it all in for $163, brand new muffler welded onto existing pipe, the rest of the pipe was still in good shape considering it's the original from 2000. Super happy with the work and deal

Used the difference for a new air filter and oil change! Good to go for a while

Good to hear!
