Steering Wheel Issues

Anyone experience a "crunching" noise that abrupts the steering, for lack of a better term sticks then releasing. It almost feels like the steering wheel is locking up. I noticed there is play in the wheel if you move it front to back. Definately feel like something broke between the column and steering wheel.
If anyone has had this experience or know what the problem may be i'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

It's either what glc said, or it's the steering rack. I'd jack the front up and try turning the wheels with the engine off.
