Question 2003 XLT FX4 Supercrew Gas Mileage

I have a 2003 XLT supercrew with the FX4 off road package with the 5.4L V8 and automatic trans that I bought back in February about mid way through the month. I just got my 10th tank of fuel today. All I have done is 2WD driving only, about 50/50 mixture of city/highway driving. My first tank of gas was 14 mpg, after that every tank has been between 11.5-12.5 mpg with a 10 tank average of 12.3 mpg. Is this typical mileage or am I short a few mpg. The truck has 177xxx miles on it and runs like a brand new truck. No clue when any maintenance has been done, other then I did an oil change shortly after buying it. If I am short by a few mpg what do you's think the best way to increase it without breaking the bank (I'm on disability, and am low income and can't really perform much work myself and have to have a shop do most of my work for me.

Not sure about everyone else, but mine is averaging about 12-12.5, mostly short distance driving.

I just bought it in March, it is a 01 SuperCrew 4x4 with 285s CAI, and Headers with dual exhaust.

Sounds right for short tripping. Are the tire sizes correct? The door jam VIN sticker will show you size.

I've never checked mine on a day to day basis. But the best mileage ever checked was driving from Homestead, FL to Key West and around the island. It averaged 17.4mpg on two occasions. The trip was a mix of 45, 50, and 55 zones with periodic stoplights. The other times I checked it were road trips where I ran 75 to 80 a lot and it got 14 sometimes and on two trips from NC to Homestead FL driving 75 to 80 most of the way it got 16.0 mpg with the stock size Michelin tires pumped up to 40 psig. Around town, I probably get 12 also but I haven't checked.

2002 f150 FX4 Lariat Screw 5.4..200k miles. 285/70/17 MT's properly inflated.

I usually get about 12.5 to 13.5 driving to work and back. I manage 14.5 highway driving 70 on a six hours Texas road trip.

I know it's not apples to apples, but my '03 FX4 5.4L Supercab gets:
16 MPG @ 70 MPH highway
13 MPG @85 mph highway
12 MPG city
14 MPG mixed

232K miles, stock wheels and tires.

My truck could be the twin to yours, equipped exactly like yours (assuming you have the 4r70w transmission) and also a 2003.
I've had it for 4-5 years now with 230K on the clock, I check my mileage after nearly every tank. Off the top of my head I'd say your getting the right kind of mileage.
In the winter with warming it up I average 10-11 mpg, during the summer 11-14 mpg depending on my driving. The worst mileage I've gotten is during the winter with idling at about 8 mpg, and the best I've gotten is about 18 mpg with a lot of highway driving.

Hope that helps
