2002 F-150 Gear Swap question

Hey guys need some help/info on a gear change question. I have a 2002 F-150 2 wheel drive single cab with a 3:08 open differential. I have a deal where a guy wants something out of his shop. It is a 2002 Mustang GT complete 8.8 rear with a Limited slip diff and 3.27 gears. I know that year Mustang has 28 spline axles, so my question is:

Does my 2WD truck have 28 spine axles?

I figure if so this should be a straight forward diff/gear swap. Dude just wants $100 for the rear (a VERY good friend lol). My thought was to rebuild diff with Carbon Fiber Disc kit and slap 3.27 gear in (which would help a bunch towing my boat). Also are our speedos gear driven or is it more involved to ensure speedo is calibrated correctly for the gear change.

Thanks in advance for info/advice/links :help:

I can't answer the spline question, but going from a 3.08 to 3.27 isn't worth the hassle. If you are towing, you would want something like 4.10's.

The speedo is not gear driven, you would need a programmer.

Thanks, it is a 19 ft Starcraft aluminum, not really heavy, I lift it off the tongue and push it into my barn, I am looking at only $100 and, living in the country on a dirt road, (freakin GA red clay ), would like the diff over the open.

WOW.. 31,183 post, Holy "You are THE F-150 King " lol !!

I'm fairly sure the truck has more splines. I've seen this discussed before as I remember. Don't waste your money.

I wanna say the splines are either 31 or 33.

It's not worth it for the gear but if it fit and for $100 you get the limited slip I think thats worth the swap. But it is doubtful the spline count is right. You can have a custom drive shaft made for only a couple hundred buck but then it becomes not worth it.

I have a '97 2wd with 3.55 OEM. Trust me 4.10 is perfect. The Mustangs/Ranger 8.8 have 28 spline, the f150 4.6 8.8 had 31, and the 9.75 had 34. IIRC...

You don't necessarily need a programmer for the speedo. In my Viper I went from the stock 3.07 to 3.55 and used a "Yellow Box" http://www.yellr.com/

You can find them used on ebay pretty cheap.

I bought one for the V10 swapped F150 too, but have been too busy to install it.
