Gears install- Is this a good kit/ price

So I came across this local ad, is it a good and deal? Is the install kit worth it?

http://hamilton.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAd?A...stBgVcTzsEmsM*

I have 3.08 open differential right now, wanted to go up to 3.73 but for this price I think I could swing 4.10. I will be running stock tires for a bit, but then maybe upgrade to 265s when I put my new engine and transmission in.

98 f150 4.6 386 000 kms.

Thanks in advance

Price isn't bad for a new set with the install kit, but that's a really low ratio for the tire size you plan to run.

When I'm done building the truck, I am looking for pulling power (torque) and acceleration/ speed. I basically want a strong truck. I thought 4.10 would be a bit much, I still want decent mpg's lol. That price is unheard of in my area though

I have a 4.10 with 265/75R16s and I like it a lot.

It says any ford with 8.8 rear end....i am pretty sure thats not true because some 8.8's in rangers/explorers/mustangs/f150's have different splines either 28 or 31 spline, so i would make sure it will fit your 8.8 rear

wilderthing 04-13-2013 12:08 AM

How would I go about finding out what spline my truck has? Stupid question I know, but I don't wanna drop this kinda cash on something that wont work and that I wont be able to resell. Also, could I add limited slip (positrac) with this kit instead of having an open differential?

Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated.

It would probably be cheaper to just get a good axle from a salvage yard that already has LS and the 3.73 you are lookin for.

hunterjh 04-13-2013 05:32 AM

I would just do what buxton said...I'd upgrade to a 9.75 rear especially if you wanna tow and get it from a craigslist or salvage yard f150 with 3.73s and ls....way easier install too

pizzaman711 04-13-2013 11:12 AM

9.75 rear end up grade will need the drive shaft too, or modification to yours.

hunterjh 04-13-2013 11:44 AM

True that but still cheaper and you'd have limited slip

wilderthing 04-13-2013 07:18 PM

Ok so there is no way to add ls to this kit? I would like to upgrade to a 9.75 but the prices up here are ridiculous. Also, if I buy another axle I would wanna rebuild it, so it wouldn't be cheaper lol. I am patiently putting in a whole new power train and want it to be strong, solid and reliable. Keeping this length of drive shaft would also be preferred.

So could I make this work with a ls? I am meeting him soon...

Thanks for all the help and in advance

yes you could but a limited slip or locker (a good one) is gonna be $600 bucks......are you installing this yourself?

I would like too. I like doing most of my own work, but I could try to find someone local to do it.

If I cant tell what spline my truck is I guess I have to pass on this deal?

I was just hoping with this kit for 250 then a ls or air locker for about 600 would still be a good deal imo- was trying to stay under 1000 in the rear end.

Let me know if there is a way I could find out if these will all work together (splines, etc). I have tried to research it but have to work overtime all this weekend :(

pizzaman711 04-14-2013 10:33 PM

Just a heads up, if your not completely sure you can do the install I wouldn't risk it, it's one of those things where if something is slightly off all those parts you just put in could be shot and need to be replaced.

hunterjh 04-15-2013 11:32 PM

X2 on what pizza said....31 is the spline for the 8.8 rear in the f150s....but it's like 28 for some rangers and explorers ...this kit could work fine I just am unsure because it says it fits ALL 8.8's which I don't believe
