What on Earth is This Thing?

'03, 5.4, Reg Cab, XL, 4x4, 7700

The U-bolt that connects the muffler to exhaust from engine has a bracket and this 'pipe' connected to it. The 'pipe' is about 8" long, and capped on each end. Does anyone know what this 'pipe' thing does?

Exhaust damper.

To help absorb sympathetic vibrations/drone @ certain rpm.

From: In the fast lane from LA to Tokyo...
exhaust counter weight balancer....

quote from king Darren
These trucks only come with one single muffler. They all come with catalytic converters which aren't mufflers. An important part of the OBDII emissions efficiency systems, and to keep legal. The thing near the Y pipe is a weight balancer since the pipes on the inlet/outlet of the muffler are offset. That piece helps dampen vibration from the exhaust,

Dampener.

There is nothing to balance, hence no need for a counterweight ...

Actually, the 98 has one. It's just not like that one.

That one came about in 01.

The 98's are branched from the tranny mount. They had problems with them cracking the plate over the mount.
