Hate to resurrect an old thread, but on my 1997, the odometer only works intermittently. It works one day and not the next. The speedo works fine all the time. Would the VSS still be the issue or would it be in the cluster? Hoping for an easy fix.
Thanks

On the cluster, I think there was only a single harness that was plugged in on the back of it? It was a number of years ago when I pulled it out last and just don't remember... Sorry..

Good luck with it at any rate!

Probably not. I took my cluster out about a year a go and couldn't figure out how to get inside the gears for the odometer. I've read that the little gears inside there can get stripped or misaligned.

Just downloaded the manual (posted in another thread) and it says that if the speedo works and the odometer doesn't to replace the cluster.

GL and let me know if you find something.

If the speedo works but the odo doesnt, its one of the gears inside the odometer housing. Take the cluster off, and take the face off the back of the cluster housing and you will see it. It will be a PITA to change, hence why I went to the junkyard and got a cluster with a tach in it for an upgrade.

I was under the impression that on the 97-98's you couldn't go from no tach to a cluster with a tach please enlighten me

Mine has a full cluster with speedo, tach, oil pres, water temp, volts and fuel. How much does a replacement cluster run? do you have to match the mileage?

You just check the box in the title that says mileage not correct. you could save the old cluster or keep a record of the mileage.. I would seek out a junkyard cluster. Pricy from ford I'd bet and thats the only chance of getting new if they still have it..

My odometer doesent work and I was cruising around here and found a thread on a poor solder joint on the circut board in the back of the cluster looked relatively like a easy fix although I am new and have not found the thread since that first day. The fix was for a digital odometer, I don't know if that's what you have...

You can have your cluster repaired by a company whose name escapes me. When they fix it, they enter the correct mileage for you before sending it back...I will try to remember the name of the co. If it was digital, mileage is stored in the ecu.

You can. They both have three large electric clips in the back. The truck is already wired for the tach. Just find a unit with a tach and swap them out.
