Strange Shifter Problem

98 F150 Lariat Scab 4.6 M5OD

The clutch slave cylinder started to leak so I replaced the cylinder/throwout bearing assembly.
During the project I found the shift lever retainer eccentric did not have a nut on it. I was able to tap it out to pull the lever and boot.
On reinstall I did install a retainer nut.
Overall the project seemed to go well but when finished it seems the shift lever is quite loose and wobbles with a lot of play.
Since I did not access the top cover in any manner the components there should not have been disturbed.
Any ideas?

OK Mods, mark this solved.

This was a real DOH! Moment.
I removed the boot again for access and looked at the whole thing again and I could rotate the shifter a pretty good about around the shift stub. So, I pulled the eccentric and removed the shifter, looked it all over and it all looked good so I put things back together. Apparently, and somehow, even though the eccentric bolt seemed to fit right and tightened up it was out of position and allowed the shifter to rotate. Since I finagled the eccentric around the slop is gone.
Go figure.
I feel like such a maroon.
