Help me choose some 38's?
I got a 6" lift waitin to go in my truck. But i need some tires first! i have 4 in my mind right now that i got priced out. BFG All terrain. BFG mud terrain. Nitto terra mud grappler. Nitto terra all terrain grappler. Which one would ya go with? i just have a set of stock 17" rims that im using for now.

I would not suggest running 38's on factory wheels...They are too narrow...
|
All of those are excellent tires. But, the Mud Grappler is extremely loud and wears quickly, if that is an issue.
|
MUD GRAPPLERS!! i loved mine when i had them, they are loud, but do great in mud. i got about 40K out of them too!
the second choice would be the bfg KM2's. these are good tires, ride well and arent too loud. |
ya my first choice was the mud grappler. but i dont want it to wear to fast cause im not loaded haha. the BFG mud isnt to bad either i dont think. any other suggestions?
|
I would go with KM2's. I think you will be fine with the stock 17s though. I know a guy who ran 38x13.5's on a set of 17x8s forever. I believe they were mud graps though.

I'm shopping for tires as well. If you are looking for 38"s in a 17" rim size you have a few choices, but they are all generally 13.5" - 14.5" wide. In my opinion, that's too wide for the stock 7.5" wide rims.
If you go with a 37"x12.5"x17, there are a few choices in tires, and you can certainly shoe-horn a 12.5" wide tire onto a stock rim. If you really want to run a 38", I think you may need to shop for some wider rims, at least 9". And, as tarajerame has mentioned, you will need to re-gear you diffs, if you want to run such a large tire. I went to a 4.88 gear, but you could get by with a 4.56. Looks like your budget for the 38" just swelled up a few grand, for new rims and gears/install. Better grab some O/T at work:) |
6" kit with 38s? I remember fabtechs saying it fits 35s, didn't know you could push 38s though?
If you want a bang for your buck and your doing the fabtech route (if your doing fabtech route), I would consider going Rough country's 5".. Yea you lose an inch, but you save 1k.. Can use that money to either regear or buy a sweet set of wheels. If you want the offset on the larger tires, its definately something you may look into. 01screw20 is my good buddy, we went to highschool together and hes rocking the 6" fabtech with 35 nitto muds.. He has some pics on his profile. I am doing the 5" rough country with nitto muds. We look about level to one another. But yea, to add to the bang for your buck, if you don't mind body lifts, could probably fit set of wheels and 3" body lift along with the suspension lift for the same price as fabtec, thats if they are who you are going with. This is just an idea. also 35s may be something for you to consider. I in some ways wish I did the body lift and 38s myself but rather not do that until I regear. 35s fill the gap perfectly, I almost think bigger might be a bit extreme without a body lift, but this is my opinion. I Figured I would save the BL down the road. Heres couple pics of mine to give you an idea if you may like it or not. 5" suspension lift running 35x12.50x17 http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e366/GeorgeTHS/07.jpg heres glance of it how it is now without the runningboards/side moldings. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...doftheday4.jpg Don't mean to be opinionated or anything, just trying to make sure you get entirely out of it as you want. Going that big and regearing can get expensive, thats why I waited (even though I just did my lift a few weeks ago!) Let me know if you have any questions about my setup, I can help you with it and similiar ideas on much of the research I did |
also forgot to add, these tires are amazing. They may wear out at 30-40k, but for the reaction you get from everyone they're worth it, plus if you like loud, heres your mini airplane.
Also, they look just straight sexy http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e366/GeorgeTHS/01.jpg Heres his truck with a 6" https://www.f150online.com/forums/me...22010-056.html |
I always went with a 10" wide rim w/35's for the most part. I've ran 8's with 35's the same tires BFG's AT's and the 10's made the tires look much better. 12's with 38.5's, 14's w/44's.

I'm thinking its between the BFG mud, or the nitto mud. Not sure which yet. i am thinking the BFG last longer so i might go with them. Ya im going to re-gear. not positive to which yet but i know i should if i run such big tires. I might go with the 37's so i dont have to worry about rubbing either. Anyone know where i can find a decent(not to flashy) set of aluminum or chrome rims? in canada lol! and Legorette, i have a 3" body in my truck right now and putting a 6" in, so it will be a 9" lift.
