97-03 fx4 and reg 4x4???

Just wondering what was different on a fx4 in these years, I'm guessing shocks but what else?

ChrisT 04-22-2009 12:12 PM

I'm pretty sure the only difference was the Rancho shocks, LS differential and additional skid plates, other then the obvious cosmetics.

Those are the only mechanical differences I have noticed.

Cosmetic wise the 17" FX4 wheels and the stickers on the box were the only two changes.

don't forget about the steering dampner

Roadie 04-25-2009 04:02 PM

In 2000 I bought a new 4x4 and the off road model had skid plates and 17" wheels. I preferred the regular model because I thought the 16" wheels that year looked better and since it had a 3.55 rear, I didn't want the effect of larger wheels on the gearing. My standard 4x4 had traction lok.

The 2002 that I bought last week is a FX4. I was wondering about the Rancho shocks. I thought the previous owner had installed them. I think this truck rides a little stiffer probably because of those shocks.

so only the 3/4 ton and larger trucks came with the steering dampner???

kaboom10 06-01-2009 08:39 PM

I went with Edelbrock IAS shocks. World of difference.

I presume you mean a better quality ride. My 02 FX4 rides harder than I like, harder than my 2000 standard supercab 4x4. I'm tempted to change the shocks to make it ride better. The Edelbrocks are probably a very good choice for my preferences.

I have to say they out perform the junk it came with in every aspect. More stability which has translated into things like the rear end doesn't jump up and down on a hard launch or if I want to accelerate hard on a turn I don't have the rear end shashaing around. If I had it to do over again I would have changed everything the first week I had it.

i see alot of my color scheme running around to. silver and shadow grey

also i think alot of the fx4 have the 4wd shifter lever on the floor like mine.

Roadie 06-09-2009 09:37 PM

Mine doesn't. It has the switch.

Davisio 06-10-2009 05:23 AM

Mine has the switch as well.

Good to know about the shocks. I was wondering what was making the truck ride that way.

chris_w_2008 06-10-2009 05:37 AM

i have a two guys i work with and we were talking about that must be they only had the option of the shift lever in the fx4 models because one guy has an 02 like mine and the other has an 03 and they have the shift lever also.

Blown F-150 06-10-2009 05:51 PM

A couple of the steering components are different between the regular 4x4 and the offroad/fx4.

The one I know of is the idler arms are different sizes. The measurements for the regular 4x4's are 2 1/2" and the other's are 3 1/2" between the mounting bolts. I know because I ordered the wrong one....

Manual T-case shifter knobs were not available on any Supercrews. FX4 or not.

blackjack8900 06-10-2009 06:31 PM

I believe ESOF started being offered in 98....

My 97 which was just 4x4 had manual and my 02 FX4 had ESOF

FX4 Adam 06-12-2009 01:25 PM

03 Scab FX4 here with t-case shifter on the floor.
