Programmer 1715 Shift Points?
Programmer 1715 Shift Points?
How do I know what I want to change the shift points to with this tuner? I know I keep saying this, but I am ordering it soon and I was just reading through the installation and came across the shift point section. They say if you change a shift point higher, it automatically lowers the downshift right?
Mike, or anyone, can you explain how I change the shift points to create the "best" results, as in fastest shifting, especially 2nd gear because it is SOO long.. is there anything I can do to change that in specific?.. but most importantly, just get the best results possible?
Thanks in advance,
Jd

i got great results just going with performance and leaving the shiftpoints at default (superchips) and the shiftfirmness at max. putting the shiftpoints too high makes our trucks windout and therefor dogg it.

Hi Phat,
Just a reminder - Using the search feature to read any of my hundreds upon hundreds of previous posts on this exact same topic is a lot quicker than waiting for me to see your post & get time to type out a response. Any information anyone could want about any aspect of the 1715 has been discussed here hundreds, if not literally thousands of times - just a reminder!
Briefly..............
You don't need to worry about the shift points - that is already done in the default upload in the 1715, you're not going to "improve" on that in your vehicle. The ONLY change that should be made manually with the 1715 is to bump the 2-3 shift point up exactly 2 notches - that helps it get back up into 4th gear (Overdrive) quicker after a 4-3 downshift, even though it's an adjustment to the 2-3 upshift point.
Last - as you may remember from our discussions here, going with our custom tuning is going to get a better performance result than the 1715 - it will cost a little bit more, but that small additional cost is nothing for anyone that can afford one of these vehicles, or compared to the additional power & performance benefits.
PS - For "Quagmeyer" - thanks for your post, and just FYI, we recommend NEVER setting the shift firmness levels at MAX on the 1715 - long-term that overworks the front pump and can accelerate wear on the pump. You're trying to drain a swimming pool thru a straw like that, is one way to put it. Anyone that wants hard shifts needs to do it the right way so as not to shorten the service life of transmission components - which is a combination of mechanical mod to the tranny (either the Transgo shift kit or the FTVB) and the PCM program changes. Shift firmness levels should not be set more than 2-3 notches above the default upload from the 1715 - just FYI.

Hi Quagmeyer,
Just a quick post to say I hope I didn't offend you, that was just meant to be an FYI" kinda thing!
This is a topic that comes up from time to time - most people who want a tuner also want firm shifting, too - and a lot of us *really* like having a tire-chirping full-throttle 1-2 upshift - I think that's pretty well ingrained in a lot of us basic red-blooded American hot-rodders.
Now some of these trucks will chirp the tires with our tuning alone, and if they happen to do that, that's fine - we just don't recommend trying to make the tranny shift hard enough to do that on *all* trucks consistently simply due to the fact that via electronic means, we're increasing fluid *pressure* first, and fluid *volume* second. We can crank up the line pressure enough to make a lot of these vehicles chirp the tires on the WOT 1-2, but we also want to retain normal durability & reliability - so if that is the kind of shift characteristic that is desired, (meaning a tire-chirping WOT 1-2 upshift), then that is done *safely* by a combination of both our tuning changes and either the FTVB or a Transgo shift kit. That way you get the increased fluid *volume* that is needed to shift that quick & hard without having to crank in a ton of raw line *pressure*, which works the front pump harder - that's all.
As always, thanks for your post!
