F-150 Aluminum Bed Speared by Tree Branch! Our Forum Reacts…

Aluminum bed

Is this F-150 aluminum bed damage an example of Mother Nature at her most fierce? Or is it nothing more than fake news?

It’s hard to think of a more tired argument in recent times than the aluminum vs. steel debacle. Yet this proverbial beating of a dead horse just won’t go away. For whatever reason, folks just don’t seem to understand the difference between an F-150 aluminum body and the beer cans they crush over their head on weekends. Maybe it’s because they’ve crushed one too many on their soft noggins.

Plenty of people have debunked the myth that aluminum truck bodies are junk — over and over again. But some folks just won’t let it go (including Chevrolet). And the latest attempt at flaming them happened right here in the F-150 Online forums.

It all went down when a member by the name of Texaskey posted a couple of pictures purportedly showing a 2016 Ford F-150 aluminum bed impaled by a tree branch. The pictures were accompanied by a little bit of a back story.

“I am speaking on behalf of my son-in-law who’s not sure what to do. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves. They live in Virginia among large tall trees. As you can see a large spear-like branch came straight down and thru the soft Aluminum Alloy truck bed.

“Fortunately, the gas tank was not in this area. I contacted the customer relations Ford division, explained the issue, sent them these photos, and no response from Ford thereafter.”

Now, more than a few fellow forum members have come up with reasons to poke holes in this story (pun intended). For one, the pictures appear staged and you can’t actually see where the branch has actually punctured the truck’s bed.

Also, Texaskey posted this nearly two months ago and hasn’t responded to any questions. But our always astute members noticed even more problems with his claim.

As madmatt83 points out, the same pictures and story appeared on at least one other F-150 forum nearly a year ago.

The obvious attempt at trolling didn’t get past bubbabud‘s B.S. detector either. “Looking close at the picture, it looks staged to me with the branch cut and part of it propped up under the truck with no actual hole or any other damage to truck,” the longtime member said.

“There is also no way to tell how fast that log was going,” says forum member AMET. “For all we know it could have gone through a steel bed.”

But is this more than just a simple case of trolling by some guy with way too much time on his hands?

BlackBoost sure seems to think so. “Chevy’s gone too far by posting these fake stories. Yeah, I’m on to you Chevy!”

And even if the story is somehow true, saying that this only happened because the bed is aluminum is a suspect argument. “There is no way to tell how fast that log was going, for all we know it could have gone through a steel bed,” noted AMET.

“Completely agree,” adds RedRanger04g. “There is no way to tell how fast the tree was moving when it went through the truck bed. Heck, it could have gone through a concrete wall, there is no way to tell.”

As expected, forum members never heard back from Texaskey. Nor did we receive better pictures of the alleged damage.

Now, we’re pretty sure the millions of satisfied F-150 owners out there are satisfied with the toughness and durability of their Ford trucks. But we still want to know what you think of this F-150 story. Sound off in the F-150 Online forums!
