F-150 owner is among growing number of auto enthusiasts going to technical school to make a career out of their love of great machines.

One of the easiest ways to refresh the looks of an F-150 of any age is to change the wheels. Usually, that means a new set matching a given owner’s taste, but sometimes, that can also mean restoring or redoing the wheels already on the truck.

This is where F150online forums member Dj55 comes in. He’s getting his 2000 F-150 ready for repainting, and is looking to keep the wheels his truck has. The only question is, does he rechrome the aluminum, or does he strip it for polishing?

“Either I get them rechromed or I remove the chrome all together and get the aluminum polished,” Dj55 says. “What would be the best in the long run? I also would like to know how hard is it to polish aluminum that was chrome plates, is it not worth polishing? Would polished aluminum look weird with the chrome grille and mirror covers?”

Our own F150online Technical Article Contributor ManualF150 suggested he rechrome the wheels of his F-150, then praised his decision to attend technical school instead of college. Dj55 replies that his school is just a county career and tech center, and has plans to attend “a real tech center” after graduating from high school.

Dj55 is, of course, just one of a growing number of students deciding to attend technical school instead of college, whether because college is too expensive or not the right fit for their needs, or because they want a career in a profession with greater rewards. To rise to the challenge, Buffalo, New York ABC affiliate WKBW-TV reports Governor Andrew Cuomo has formed a task force to develop programs meant to attract students into the automotive technician field.

Such programs would build upon generalist programs already established in the state, like the Erie BOCES programs in Erie County, which are funnelling students into practically guaranteed jobs. For example, the Erie-2 BOCES program recently hosted an automotive repair competition, according to WKBW-TV, where students demonstrated their competence in everything from knowledge to work ethic.
