‘Maxim’ Lists Ford SVT Lightning Among Top ’90s Vehicles

1999 SVT Lightning

Lightning is the only truck to be honored on the list, and rightfully so!

1999 Ford F-150

One of our favorite mags, Maxim just released its top 10 list of the best rides of the ’90s. While there are some great cars listed, there was only one truck.

And in our humble opinion, if a magazine is going to list one truck in their top 10 list of ‘90s vehicles, it definitely should be the 1999 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning.

Back in the early to mid-’90s, car manufacturers were trying to top each other with hot rod-influenced trucks. In 1993, the Ford SVT team developed their first version of the Lightning. While the truck was pretty great for the three years it was released, it wasn’t until the SVT team released a new Lightning in 1999 that they showed truck fans exactly what a hot rod truck could be.

With the lowered profile and 18-inch rims, the Lightning didn’t look like other trucks.
It looked like a vehicle you wouldn’t want to race against.

With 360 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, the 1999 SVT Lightning could definitely move. However, it’s not just what’s under the hood that makes the truck one of the best of the ‘90s. Some might complain about the lack of an extended cab, but when you drive a sports car, people don’t complain that the car can’t fit their whole family. As a high performance vehicle, the regular cab is just perfect for the truck. Also, with the lowered profile and 18-inch rims, the Lightning didn’t look like all the other trucks on the road. It looked like a vehicle you wouldn’t want to race against.

Maxim said it right, “If you like trucks, it is hard to find one better…”
