Ford Raptor Takes on Hummer H2 in the Snow

By -

You might think that an SUV would beat a truck in the snow any day of the week. But you’d be wrong!

We’ll forgive you if you’ve already forgotten about the civilian Hummer. A doomed experiment from the start, trucks like the H2 quickly found themselves labeled as the rides of folks who, um, needed to compensate for something. Big, slow, and ugly, GM mercifully killed off the Hummer brand as gas prices rose and sales plummeted. And even though no one has ever asked the question (until now), the Ford Raptor is a superior ride in every way.

But that didn’t stop the guys at The Fast Lane Truck from picking up the “World’s Most Hated Truck” with the idea of turning it into an overlander. In the meantime, a recent Colorado snowstorm gave them an excuse to see how the Hummer fared in the snow. And since they already own a first gen Ford Raptor as well, why not pit the two against each other?

Ford Raptor

Right off the bat, the Ford Raptor has a bit of an edge just based on tire quality. The BF Goodrich K02 is a phenomenal non-winter winter tire, one of the only all-season tires to carry the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake designation. It’s a big upgrade over the Hummer’s K01s, but there are other factors at play here. TFLT reports that the Raptor’s vehicle stability system and traction control make it feel “like driving on dry pavement.”

This, despite the Raptor’s inherent lack of weight in the rear. The bigger, heavier Hummer does pretty good as well, as you would imagine with weight in the back. And yet, the rear end still comes out a little when TFLT takes a spirited turn.

Hilariously, however, our presenter nearly loses it and hits a sign while attempting to explain why the Ford Raptor is better in the snow. On the bright side, the Hummer makes a pretty good snow donut machine. But not a confidence inspiring winter ride!
