Ford Leads with Aluminum: Chevy & Ram Can’t Compete
Despite the proven path forward, the Big Three choose very different paths for their next generation of trucks.
The recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit marked the debut of Chevrolet and Ram’s newest trucks, with a notable silence on one big topic: aluminum. Automotive News wrote a story we came across, and honestly, it doesn’t surprise us one bit. Does anyone else recall the eight-year span between Camaros? GM has a history of not following Ford’s lead, while grudgingly following it later on. Back to the mullet-machine’s reintroduction: retro styling inspired by, you guessed it, the Mustang’s popular move five years prior.
Now, Chevy and Ram are sticking with steel for the most part. I guess the hit-job commercials they ran didn’t make much of an impact on aluminum F-150 sales. Auto News makes an interesting point, saying, “The divergent strategies of the Detroit automakers, which account for 83 percent of U.S. light-duty pickup sales, go against the norm for the extremely competitive segment, in which big innovations by one company tend to quickly get adopted by the others.”
