Blown 5.0-Liter F-150 is One Incredible Sleeper Truck

By -

F-150 packs nearly 800 rear wheel horsepower, but it looks like your average Ford truck.

The 5.0-liter V8 engine that has been offered in the Ford F-150 since 2011 is one of the top V8 engines in the segment, but in addition to offering solid power in stock form, the “Ford Five-O” takes well to modifications. Like the Mustang GT powered by a similar V8, the F-150 can quickly be transformed into a high performance machine with the simple addition of forced induction and the video above is an excellent example of the potential gains.

This video comes to us from the YouTube channel of VMPPerformance and it features a 2013 Ford F-150 XLT making a quick run on the rollers and the results are nothing short of awe-inspiring.

The Build

The 2013 Ford F-150 XLT shown here is powered by the 5.0-liter V8, which in stock form back in 2013 offered 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. This truck has a built engine with a 10.4-to-1 compression ratio, topped by a VMP TVS Gen 3 2650 supercharger wearing a 69-millimeter pulley and fitted with stainless steel headers. The engine has been tuned to run on VP Fuels MS 109 racing gasoline and a combination of Caltracs traction bars and a set of Nitto 305-50-20 all-terrain tires help get the best possible traction on any driving surface.

Supercharged 2013 F-150 Engine

Most importantly, while this 2013 F-150 has a built-and-blown V8 engine and custom wheels, it looks like a stock truck. There are no “supercharged” badges or anything suggesting that it has nearly 800 rear wheel horsepower, but it does.

Dyno Action

The video above begins by giving us a quick look at the engine and other key attributes of this sleeper truck, followed by a quick rip on the rollers. The blower whines loudly and the built V8 roars through the custom exhaust as the Nitto tires fight to keep the power to the dyno and when the run ends, the results are incredible.

2013 Ford F-150 on the Dyno

As you can see in the dyno sheet here, this 2013 Ford F-150 packs 788 horsepower and 706 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. Using an 18% drivetrain loss ratio, this half-ton Ford truck could be making somewhere in the area of 960 horsepower and 860 lb-ft of torque at the crankshaft.

In other words, this 2013 Ford truck doesn’t look special, but it can likely hang with a great many sports cars in a heads-up race.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
