Heavily Revised 3.5 Liter Ecoboost V6 and 10-speed Transmission Shouldn’t Be Overlooked

All the attention in the world of trucks today rests solely on the revised 2018 F-150. And while the world is excited about the latest iteration of America’s best selling vehicle, we shouldn’t overlook the truck we can buy on dealer lots today. Because the 2017 F-150 isn’t just some carryover model – there are real improvements here. Namely, under the hood.

It all starts with the heavily revised 3.5 liter Ecoboost V6, an engine that nearly landed on Wards 10 Best Engines list. Ford set out to improve the popular engine’s power and efficiency while reducing weight. It all starts up top, with the introduction of dual injection technology. The use of both port and direct injection debuts in the 3.5, but rolls out to all other engines in 2018.

Other improvements to the 3.5 include higher boost turbos and electronically controlled waste gates. New alloy turbine wheels and hollow camshafts cut weight, contributing to a 4 lb reduction. Finally, a higher compression ratio of 10.5:1 helps boost horsepower to 375, up 10 from 2016. But the real gains come in the torque department – a 50 lb-ft boost to 470.

And despite the impressive power gains, the latest 3.5 also picks up 1 mile per gallon in the city and 2 mpg’s combined. At least part of that can be attributed to the all-new, 10-speed automatic transmission. The all aluminum cog box features three overdrive ratios and a direct drive ratio designed to improve highway fuel economy.

Further helping efficiency is the addition of start/stop technology, another bit that will make it’s way to all models in 2018. And while many will undoubtedly groan about the change, early reviews point to a system that is barely detectable. That, along with the smooth shifting gearbox, are music to the ears of F-150 fans.

So while the forthcoming 2018 model gets all the press, don’t sleep on the 2017 F-150. If you’re looking for the latest in powertrain technology, you don’t have to wait – it’s here right now.
