STYLINGLike pizza, vehicle styling comes down to personal preference. One person's idea of the perfect truck is the other person's Yugo. With 2004, the F-150's exterior has started to more closely resemble its Super Duty Big Brother, with a more aggressive grille, larger, multi-tiered windows and more angular (compared to the 1997-2003) shape, the design is not as "in your face" aggressive as the Dodge Ram, nor is it as bland as the alternatives from GM. Ford enthusiasts will immediately recognize this truck's bloodline. They should also be able to easily spot the gigantic blue oval affixed to the center of the tailgate. In fact, the oval may be recognizable from outer space...it's seems that large and out of proportion.
We found during routine driving that the truck's bed rises up quite high and often eclipses the view of vehicles that may be following a bit too closely. The large mirrors do an excellent job of showing the view from everywhere else and over the shoulder blind spots are minimal. The interior is a completely different story and where Ford will really shine over its competition. Ford went to great lengths to create workspaces that were like no other...and they succeeded. Comparing our 1997's interior to the 2004's interior is like comparing Gumby to Michelangelo's David. The look of the dash varies based on the trim level selected, but each is consistent in its basic design. In addition to easily readable gauges, the interior of the Lariat features a rich looking wood texture, while the FX4 sports a modern carbon fiber look. Vertical columns stretch across the expansive dash separating the gauge pod and steering column, first column of vents, radio and HVAC controls, well you get the idea. While on the subject of vents...they feature an innovative design that rotate 360 degrees, close fully and can be angled to direct airflow in practically any direction (see the San Antonio gallery listed above for examples). Ford now also offers a flow-thru console option that splits the front seats with a large storage compartment and rather trick looking floor shifter, an industry first. While I loved the style, the center console continually butted up against my right shin. For tall drivers, long drives may result in bruised shins. I suggest a long test drive before selecting this option, which also eliminates the ability to sit three abreast (redneck style) in the front seat. The seating surfaces themselves compliment their respective interiors, utilizing high quality materials and textures that provide firm, yet comfortable support, even for six-plus footers.
Simply stated, this interior is head and shoulders about any of the competition and makes the current F-150 interior feel quite pedestrian. |
