I have a 98 Lariat with the 5.4l, 2wd. My brake pedal is very mushy, and has been getting worse and worse. I just changed the pads and bleed the brakes, but this did not change anything. I have also had the rotors turned twice in their life. When I was searching for previous threads, I saw that someone mentioned something about a TSP recall on the brake booster, but I could not find anything on the NHTSB website. Does anybody have any suggestions? I hate taking my truck in to the shop because I always feel I am getting ripped off, I just need some suggestions because Im stuck on what to do now. did you have all the fluid flushed out?..look at your front brake lines,feel real soft?..bet theyre expanding when you apply the brakes...stainless braided will solve problem

 

I have the same mushy pedal issue. I've replaced rotors (raybestos) and drums, new bendix pads and shoes. Replaced right rear bleeder screw and bled everything three times. No Luck, my pedal still travels quite a bit. I'm gonna try to bleed the front lines again.

Haven't looked at brake booster yet.

 

...until I replaced the rear cylinders on both sides. Both were rusty and nasty, and now the pedal is firm and the truck stops MUCH better. Midas found it during a free inspection, maybe worth asking them about.

 

The brake booster TSB is not for a mushy pedal, it is for inadequate braking with a heavy load/trailer. They replace the F-150 booster with the one from the F-250. A mushy pedal could be low brake fluid, leaking wheel cylinder, leaking caliper, bad master cylinder, or contaminated/air in the brake fluid.

Somtimes the pedal feels mushy if the rear shoes are out of adjustment. Also, the material of the pads can make a difference too.

TexfordD has a good point, in the past I had replaced the rubber brake hoses on sports cars with the braided stainless steel hoses and noticed a definete improvement in pedal feel. I'm not sure everyone wants to shell out that kind of $$$$$ for three hoses though.

Seems I don't back up enough and my rear drums needed cleaning and adjusting....worked fine after that.
