ply rating?
#2
The ply ratings have to do with the load capacity of the tire. The more plys, the heavier the load the tire can take. A higher ply rated tire will be stiffer and require higher air pressures so the ride will suffer.
The tire manufacrurers have gone from a ply rating to a load range rating. The ratings are as follows.
Plys / Load Range
2 / A
4 / B
6 / C
8 / D
10 / E
12 / F
14 / G
16 / H
18 / J
20 / L
22 / M
24 / N
The main reason for the change from ply ratings to load range is the fact that today an 8 ply rated tire will probably not have 8 plys. The materials that are used in modern tires are stronger than they were when the ply rating standards were set. A modern 4 ply load range D tire will handle the same weight as an old 8 ply 8 ply rated tire. Most of the tire manufacturers are making tires for semi trucks that only have 1 ply, but that ply is wire and not fabric.
