Question 14mm lug bolt question

I know that sometime in mid 2000, FORD changed from 12mm lug bolts to 14mm lug bolts.

My question is..... Will the newer FORD wheels made for the 14mm lug bolts fit on the older trucks with the 12mm lug bolts? I have a chance to buy some nice wheels, but they are for the 14mm lug bolt. (I have a 1998 truck with the 12mm lug bolts)

I've heard that it depends on the wheel. Some wheels have smaller 12mm holes, while other have holes 14mm+ which are large enough to allow the slightly larger lugs through.

The wheels are hub-centric, meaning the hub is what centers and locates the wheel on the spindle. The lugs/nuts only serve to hold the wheel onto the spindle. I'd think as long as the hole spacing is 135mmx5, the offset is near 50% of the width, and the lugs poke through you'll be fine. Be sure the lugs are designed for the wheel. Some have a flat washer base (eg Lightning) while others might have a countersunk conical base.

Also be aware, center caps made for 14mm lug nuts won't fit onto 12mm lug nuts unless you bend the metal tangs in. If you're using caps that have plastic tangs though, you're out of luck.

Happened to me too.

I had a 1999 F-150 S-Cab Flareside. I had A/R Atlas wrapped in 295/65/16's. I'd only had'em a few months when I negotiated a sweet deal on a 2000 Expedition.

They wanted my wheels on my trade, but I took them off while we negotiated.

Anyhoo, I went to have them bolted onto my new Expy, when the tire guy came in and said- I've got good news and I got bad news. The Good news is, the bolt pattern is the same and the rims will fit. The bad news is, the lug nuts won't. I had 12mm RHt lugs on the 150, and the 2000 Expy hd 14mm RHt. They didn't have those lugs, so I had to go to Discount Tire & buy 20 Lugs @ $1.50 each. $32.47 later, I had the lug nuts and my rims were installed.

I just hope Ford doesn't change the bolt & hub set up on the 2003 Expy & Navigator. I just spent $2,500 on a set of 20's for my Expy two weeks ago. If they won't fit, I can scratch them from my short-list.
