Brake replacement at 28,000

Ok so my dealer tells me I need new rotors (can't run old ones) and pads. One of the reasons I bought Ford was I was tired of replacing rotors on my GM vehicles.

Is it reasonable for a dealer to expect me to pay $500 for new rotors and pads at 27,000 mi. I'm still under warranty. I realize it is a wear part but seriously guys, 28,000 mi, new rotors.

It's usually cheaper to get new rotors than to pay the labor to machine them. Do your brakes pulsate at all? If you complain the right way you can get them to cover rotors under warrenty, your stuck paying for the pads though as they are a normal wear item. Call the service manager and talk to him, if you are a good customer and go to them for all you service work they will usually make a deal with you.

Tiger,

That seems like low mileage for new pad and rotors. I have 42,000 miles on my front discs and my mechanic checked them two days ago and said to bring my truck in at 48,000. I am going to replace them, though.

I guy at work had his brakes go at about the same mileage and he found out that the brakes were adjusted wrong from the factory. His fronts were doing about 90% of the work instead of about 70%.

I'm hoping you just mistyped 'cause at about $10 a piece to turn rotors there's no way it can be cheaper to buy new ones.

You'll find on a lot of newer vehicles the OE rotors are thin to start with. Usually after 40k miles they are worn down even more of course and turning them puts them below the minimum recommended thickness and replacement is necessary. Newer V-dubs are like that. Fortunately for the early 90's cars without vented rotors they are $25 a side. Ha ha.

My 98 4x4 the rotors were $95cdn so around $60usd each. Pads $35 (titanium from JCWhitney).

So that's less than $200 bucks USD if you do it yourself. Don't know where dealer gets off charging $500. Gimme a break.

As far as the rear brakes go they last forever (drums anyhow - not sure about discs). Usually a cleanup, lube and adjustment is all that's necessary.
