Question Wheels/Tires for 99XL 4.2L

I'm looking to get new tires for my '99 XL 4.2L. I currently have the factory 235/70R16's on there. What is the largest I can go without getting a lift or having the tires rub? I guess I'm trying to get a little more height and a more aggressive look....Thanks....

RE: More Info

It's a 4x2 but I don't know the gear ratio or where to find it....I looked at the door post certification label but couldn't find anything that looked like it. The owners manual gives a chart for towing recommedations that includes gear ratios for various truck configurations and it has 3.31 and 3.55 listed for my model. I don't haul much (just plywood, 2x4s & drywall for home improvement stuff) and the rest of the time I am driving around the city.......So yes, I guess I wouldn't mind sacrificing a little perf to get it looking nicer. Thanks for your help!

I have the 4x2 with the 3.55 ratio. Mine came with the 255/70 16s (29").
I wanted more height and a better tread pattern than the CrapYear AP's that it came with. I went to a 235/85 16 (31"). It is the same tire that they put on the F250s. I only feel it in cornering. No real loss of acceleration. I chose the 235/85 because I wanted height but not width, I feel like I do better in snow and mud with narrow tires. I have seen 265/75 16s fit without a lift. I've heard that 285/75 will fit with a little trimming.
Hope this helps.

Cool

Ok, well, I'd say that a 265/75/16 would be the max size I'd go with. That's what I have, but it's a 4x4, 5.4 with 3.55 gears.

I've read that this size will just fit on 4x2's. But you do have a v6 and "could" have the 3.31 gears. On the door jamb sticker, there will be a code for the "axle". Mine is H9. Meaning it's a 3.55 Limited Slip. I don't recall what the other ones are, but just post what it is and someone will help you out.

Assuming you do have the 3.31's, then, I'd think you may only want to go to a 255/70/16. You could try some 75 series tires, but that makes the sidewalls a bit taller and so the overall tire will be taller.

Sorry, just checked my math...
235/70 = 29"
255/70 =30"
235/85 = 31.7"
265/75 = 31.6"

Under the "trans" section of your door sticker...19 is 3.55 non-LS.

The "trans" section should be an "E" or a "U". "E" for E4OD (4r100) or "U" for 4r70. At least that's what mine shows. (I have an "E" by the way)

I think you're correct on the I9 being a 3.55 non LS.

99+ remember that the computer needs to be programmed or reflashed to the new tire size by the dealer computers and must stay with in perameter of factory code or a custom chip must be made.
I run 265/70R17x8 and 4.56's and flipchip ,have no problems.

The label reads 27 for the axle and U for the trans. I'll guess that means 3.31? I guess I'll look at the 255/70's.

Now, what's up with the computer being programmed? I need to reset the computer to get new tires?!? We're talking about a pickup truck, not the space shuttle right?
