Question Loud annoying GROAN!

lately I'v been getting a loud groan from my rear brakes when i put my 2000 in gear. I don't notice any differance in braking but the noise is quite annoying. It only does it when i shift from park. Any ideas what causes this? i bought the truck with 34000mi on it, it now has 44000, is it time for new brakes? -Thanks

You don't need new brake yet but i may be time for a CLA, that is Clean, Lube and Adjust the rear brakes. The dealer will charge about $40 for it. Or you can do it yourself. Pull the rear tires off, pull the drums off. Hose the brakes and inside of the drums down with brake clean, get all the dust washed off. Get some Hi-Temp anti-seize in a spray can, or some other kind of brake lube, and lube up the raised bosses on the backing plate thet the shoes ride on (pry the shoes out of the way with a screwdriver), then adjust up the rear brakes until you feel a little drag when you put the drum on and spin it. That should fix it.

I don't think you'll find any rear drum brakes on a 2000 model though. Just the parking brake which is a drum unit that has been troublesome... from reading the posts.

But you could definitely take off your rear calipers and lubricate the slides which let the caliper "float" on the disc.

I didn't know they went to rear discs on the newer models. Are you sure it is standard or is it still just an option?
