Painting my Rims, have a question before I start.

I am going to paint my rims and grill gloss black. i bought 5 cans of Gloss Krylon Paint. Do I need to put down a base primer first on the rims or am I okay with just using a sanding block to scuff them up? Also do I need clear coat? I chose Krylon because I have used it may times on metal and it always held up good and its only 3.50 a can. Should I return the cans and get something else, if so what? Primer, gloss, clear? Or am I okay with what I have. I have the rims that are powder coated with that beige color inside and polished aluminum on the flat face on my 05 Lariat SCREW.

You shouldn't need primer on the painted wheels. But, primer on the chrome center cap may be needed, if you are gonna paint them also. Clearcoating them would be a good idea.

I am getting new tires should I wait till after to do it? Or will I be okay doing it before, or will it chip when they break off the old tires?

it will definitely chip when they replace the tires.

If you do it before, plan on touching up the edges.

Definitely wait until after you get your new tires. After that's done, follow the thread below. That's what I did to my old wheels and it held up nicely.

Thanks, I saw that thread before starting this and did not find my answer in it so i started this one. I may get the Duplicolor stuff and return the Krylon so i get a better coat and better product.

I may be a little late but any update on those painted wheels? I was thinking of plasti-dipping mine so kinda curious on what yours look like. I just bought this 09' recently with what looks like the same wheel style.

I'm very surprised to see the '04/'08 style Lariat wheel on your '09+. Those wheels usually come inward at the center and I swore back a couple years ago I was reading some people couldn't get them to clear the calipers due to the inward center shape.

It took me till today to get find the tires I want haha. So i am ordering my Autospring 2.5 Level and 1.5 AAL in two weeks and then in 4-6 weeks getting my 305/65/18 BFG T/A KO. Sorry about the wait. But plasti dip is good for street vehicles. If you plan to go off road I would not recommend it. Rocks and stuff will peel it off. I am going to do dupicolor wheel paint primer, base and clear so it turns out like a pro job. So if you can hang in there about 6 weeks lol They will be painted.

I'm as surprised as you are Darren. Being the first time I own a F150, I had no idea I had 04-08 wheels until I noticed that all but one wheel are the same. All but the front drivers side wheel has a light bronze inlay with a silver face. I'm guessing previous owner took the wheels with him, or had aftermarket wheels that he romoved or w/e. ANYWAYS, I'll be doing the wheels sometime this week. Anyone know a quick way to get the white off the letters? Black tire marker maybe??

i think the best idea is to not be cheap and just pay to get them flipped and rebalanced at the same time I install the leveling kit... which has nothing to really do with this post but you get it. lol...
