Wrangler AT Extreme on 2001 f150

I want to know if it's possible to put Wrangler AT Extreme (hummer H2 tires) on a 2001 f150 supercrew (no added lift). The sticker inside the door says 16's, but I talked to the parts department at my local Ford dealer and he says I can go up to 265/70/17. Right now I have 245/16's and they look so stupid on a 4wd truck. Please let me know if the Wrangler AT's will work as is or do I have to make any mod's (lift or spacers). Also, will the extra weight of the AT's make a difference braking? The Wrangler AT Extremes only come in one size (according to goodyear.ca) at 315/70/17. Thanks guys.

I've seen some stock trucks with 315's on stock wheels and stock suspension and they looked really stuffed and bad IMO.

since the AT's you are talking about are for 17" wheels, and you have 16", obviously they won't fit on your stock wheels, you need to pick up a set of 17" wheels, preferably 8-10" wide. I think most aftermarket 17's are 9" wide which will be perfect.

I'd go with a 3" body lift like the one I have, and then the 315's on new 17" wheels will make your truck look like a totally different truck!

if you don't want to add a body lift, I'd get a set of 285/75R16's for your stock wheels, they will look a hell of a lot better than the 245's on your truck now.

good luck!

Lift question

Thanks for the info - your truck looks great. Mine is actually identical to yours: wedgewood blue, same 4x4 badge on rear, but my running bars are the solid black ones instead of the chrome you have. Plus I still have the stock exhaust but am thinking of changing it to something better. My wife just got me a solid tonneau cover with matched paint which looks great.

I was wondering about the lift kit that you installed, was it hard to do? My father is a mechanic and I have access to a garage with all the needed tools and lifts so we could probably get it done without too much trouble. What are the price ranges for them? How does it affect suspension and ride? I am currently thinking about changing the stock shocks for Bilstein ones. Please let me know what you think.

A body lift does not affect your suspension or ride quality at all.

Last I checked, H2's have 315/70R17 BFG AT KO tires, no Goodyear Wrangler AT Extremes whic h I've never herad of. Maybe it's a Canadian thing.

My opinion is that 315/70R17 looks bad on stock heigh 4x4's, and the weight on those will penalize braking, acceleration, and fuel economy.

He's talking about the US Military Hummers(HUMVEE)...Goodyear makes a Wrangler especially for them and they are made only in one size due to being made for those trucks. I never knew what Goodyeard called them before but my dad was in the National Guard when I was a kid and there was always Humvees around to oogle over as the ultimate 4x4.

the old H1 milatary Hummers had 37x12.50R16.5 tires and most of them were bias-ply

I don't remember hearing anything about them switching to 17" wheels...

you can usually pick up a set of those old 16.5's really cheap as no one in their right mind wants a bias-ply tire on a street truck

Here's the web page which led me to believe that Wrangler AT Extreme were only for the H2. Also, look at the other link from Goodyear.ca - you can see in the picture that the wheels are from an H2.

H2' ship with the BFG AT KO. Other people have gone to Humemr dealers and bought take-offs for pretty cheap. That is the only vehicle sodl with 315/70R17 tires and GY looks like they make one tire specifically fore people to replace them. It looks similar to the Wrangler ATS.

I stand by my opinion, though:
315/70R17 looks bad on stock height 4x4's, and the weight on those will penalize braking, acceleration, and fuel economy. They weigh 50% more than your current tires and give a 13% reduction in your gearing.

The tire model you chose will impact looks more than the size. The BFG is one of the best looking AT tires.
