Sell lift kit or just buy smaller tires?

I have 2001 f150 supercrew 4x4 5.4l with rancho 4" lift kit with 315/75/16 tires on centerline convo pro wheels. Im getting about 14mpg between highway and city. Looking to improve fuel economy and $, was thinking about lower truck to 2" with some 31's. Or maybe trade someone some stock fx4 rims and tires for my tires and lift. What do you think would be the best option? What would be the smallest tires size I could run with the 4" lift without looking stupid and would save MPG and $ for tires.

The most I would do would be to install some 305/70-16 (33x12.50) tires

Lift/tires/wheels

Well if you weren't in Florida, I'd trade ya tires and wheels, and lift.

tire size

wendell,

do you mean that 305 would be the smallest tires size that you goto from the 315 or the max size for my truck. Just curious, this is the first time I have had a truck with a lift didnt know if i was causing damage to my truck with the 35" tires. I already have to replace the ball joints. Thanks.

Attitude,

yes if i was closer i would trade you. Thanks though

What I meant was that I think you have the ideal package. I don't think you are hurting your truck. I would not even consider removing the lift. I just meant the say that I would consider going down to a smaller tire size, but I would not go smaller than a 305/70-16. I think a tire any smaller than the 305/70's would look bad. Also, I don't think 14mph is bad at all. Especially for a lifted full size 4x4. I don't think going to a smaller tire is gonna make that much difference in milage anyway.

If you remove the lift and tires, you'll go from 14MPG to 15 MPG. Did you correct your speedometer when you got bigger tires? I bet your mileage is better than you think it is...

Good point. If your speedometer/odometer hasn't been corrected, you are traveling farther than your odometer shows. That would mean your MPG average is better than your calculations show.

You could buy a lot of gas with the money you will spend on the conversion. I would keep what you have. Do all the other "things" to save gas like checking tire pressure, no jackrabbit starts, keeping your truck tuned.......

Thanks

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I dont know for sure if the speedo was changed the guy i bought it from said that the guy he bought it from corrected the speedo for the tires. I thought I would get a little better then 15mpg that why i was considering it. but if it's just 1mpg then you right it's not worth the money. I'll have to check the speedo and re-calutate the mpg and go from there. Thanks for all the help.

stang man,

i want to re-calc my mpg first, but feel free to contact me. if my calculations send my mpg south, then we can hash out some type of deal. thanks. colecs@comcast.net.

Cole, I'll tell you right now...It's not worth the hassle to change out your suspension and rims. I just got 15 MPG running all highway, 70 - 80 with a little bit of in town driving. And I'm 2wd.

I get 11-12mpg average w/ 33" tires in my Screw. 14mpg? Not gonna find much to improve that.

Ok got my answer.

I did some testing over the last day or so. I found I was orginally getting 11-12 like others, I know this sounds stupid but I have been running the tornado and thats where i got the 14mpg from. i put it in after 2 tanks of gas. so then i figured out my speedo was wrong due to the tire change. i used the mile marker sign instead of my speedo and my truck was traveling further then my odometer was telling me. so with some calculations i found i am getting a little over 15mpg (15.1, but i couldnt be exact on the milage overage from the speedo and mile marker, about .3 miles) probally about 13 without it. I will have to take it back out and do more testing. all this driving has been mixed highway and local for complete milage per tank(25gal). Thanks for all your help and suggestions. I guess the only other reason to change would be looks and money for tires. but what the heck, im getting more mpg then i thought so that great. thanks again.

Another factor for your calculations. Are you using 25 gallons or the actual amount used for each tank?
