I have 315/70/17 tires w/3.73 gears. My truck is 5.4L and heavy. I think it is significantly slowed by the increase in tire diameter. I like gears. Others are satisfied with this combination. I think gears are needed. These trucks were geared from the factory for gas mileage (and some performance). I think 4.10s are needed at a minimum from the factory on the 5.4 trucks.
I'm not so sure the 4.6 would do much better unless you have the 5 speed manual tranny. 5 locked gears are way better than 3+ slipping gears if you have too much tire diameter...

This is where I differ from Wandell. I have a 4WD Scew 5.4L 3.73 axle ratio and 285/70R17. My previous truck was a Supercab with 5.4L and 3.73 gear and 265/70R17 tires. That truck had better performance than my Screw, even if i put 500 pounds in the back of that truck. I wouldn't try 315's without a 4.56 gear. With a 4.6L? Ha!
The 315/70 BFG weighs 64 pounds, or 64% more than a stock Goodyear RT/S. 285/70 is 54 pounds and 38% heavier. Those extra pounds require more power to overcome than weight in the back of your truck. More power to accelerate, more to brake.
