How the F%$# do you get the front rotors off a 4x4???

Ok...Here's the deal....2000 F150 4x4 Off road 5.4....146k, time to do the brakes again....Last time I did them I only replaced the pads figuring the next time I do them, I will need to replace the front rotors...So here we are...I removed the wheel, caliper, and caliper bracket....As far as I know, the rotor should come off now????????? I have been pounding on it with a small sledge hammer for an hour, and it hasnt budged,,,,And this is still the first one, and my nerves are shot.....Am I missing something.....Somebody please help.....

Keep swinging. They can be a bear sometimes. Worst case, you can cut a slit in the rotor and use a big cold chisel to try to crack it in two, but I've never had to go that far. Then again, I don't live in a rustbelt state either.

Spray some penetrating oil, or WD-40 around the hub and let it soak awhile.

Then, start beating on it while spinning the disc.

It will come off, eventually.

Alright, it's a 4x4, but my 4x2 I needed to remove that nut under the dustcap. This may be pointless, but you don't happen to have that do you? If you do, try that

Try hitting it between the studs on the face. this should break it loose. Use a BFH.

On a 4x4 the rotor slides on the hub over the studs. on a 4x2 the rotor is the hub.

I went through the same process a few months ago. Started politely with a Dead Blow Rubber HAmmer, then upgraded to a small 4lb sledge hammer, pounded for about 15 minutes per side. Finally it came off.

I did clean off the hubs really good and put on a thin layer of anti-seize compound before putting on the new Rotors, hoping that if I have to go through this again, there won't be so much banging goin'on

That wont cut it. You need a sledge. We did rotors on a friends expedition with about the same mileage. We hit the rotors so hard they came off in pieces. Make sure, when you put the new ones on, you put some gold grease or some other kind of anti-sieze between the hub and rotor.

Good luck.

Hah! I used the search just like you always preach, and found 2 other references to the "blue tip wrench", none of which clearly explains this mystery tool I "torched" this site looking for the "flaming" answer, and still can't figure it out. That just "burns" me, "hot" damn! I'm just gonna have to raise the "heat" and "fire" this question at you: What is a "blue tip wrench"? I know, I know...I overdid it
