Change in tire size - safety and wear question

I'm thinking about putting 235/75-16 tires on my '97 extended cab to replace the stock 235/70-16 tires (I can get a good deal for this size), but I have some questions for you more knowlegeable types. I know my speedometer/odometer will be off a bit, but I can deal with that problem. However, since this is a taller sidewall/tire, are there any handling or other safety concerns I should be worried about? Would you get something wider than 235 to go with the increase in height? How about tread wear? Anything I'm not thinking about? Thanks for the help!

No, you should be fine. Many members (myself included) here have made much more drastic changes in tire size without any problems.
Also, welcome to the site.

tire size

235/75's are approx 1inch taller than the OEM 235/70's, and a bit narrower. they are approx 3.2% larger as a matter of fact. So yes your speedo will be off a bit, and you may notice a slight decrease in performance depening on engine, and gear ratio, but if that doesn't matter, then you should be happy.

They are the same width. The 235 is the width of the tires tread in millimeters.

The only thing i'd consider is if the sidewalls are soft you may have ill effects on handling. It would feel softer, squishier.

Thanks for the help!

Thank you all for the advice. Ironically, my deal may have fallen through - we'll see. My biggest concern was that the taller tires might be a little less safe because of "squishier" or softer sidewalls - worrying about carrying the kids around, you know. I should have known that the relatively minor change in height wouldn't be that big of a deal. Probably a wider tire would help make up for that a little. With a great forum like this available tho', I figured why not ask someone with the smarts to really know. Thanks again, guys...
