Convert 2wd to 4wd on 84 f150?

Hello,

I bought this 84 f150 a short time ago.
I was wondering if it is possible to convert it over to 4wd?
What would I need besides the transmission?
Do I need diffrent front wheel hubs?
How would I connect the front wheels to the transmission?

It is not worth the time or the money. You could definitely buy a 4x4 for less money than it would cost to convert it. To start with, I don't think the frames are the same so it is not just a simple matter of swapping stuff. The better bet if you really wanted to keep this truck would be to go find a 4x4 with a rusted out body and swap the bodies. It would be cheaper and easier in the long run

Good luck.

Actually on the 80-96 F150s its not as hard as you might think. Its not going to be real cheap, but its much better than trying to do this on a 97+ F150. The frames are the same, the crossmembers are a little different. The front crossmember which is the big pain to swap should be the same between 2wd and 4wd. On Rangers for example its different, but the 150 didn't have this problem. You will need a transmission and transfer case from the 4x4 truck. You will then need the front suspension and axle, as well as the different crossmembers uses (except the front engine crossmember). Another option would be to keep your transmission and find a divorced transfer case like an NP205 or D24 tcase. Just make sure they're from a Ford and not a GM as the diff would be on the wrong side of the truck. From there you can skip doing the TTB front axle found on 80-96 F150 4x4 trucks. This axle was inferior at best. Instead find a 77-79 F150 or 78-79 Bronco and get the front suspension out of that. That will require the same amount of work as the TTB (possibly a little less) and you'll have a much better axle (solid axle) when you're done. You can find a good D44 front axle in a yard for $100-150 depending on gears and condition. I picked mine up for $150, but they sold for more money in my area.
