I feel your pain. I've got the 18's and they really suck when it come to buyin tires. I dont think you should have a prob with the 16 inch wheel but dont take my word for it.

Stock sizes

Depends. Many of the trucks of your style ie 97-2003 had 16" rims, but many also had 17" wheels. It will depend on the brakes your truck is equiped with. I believe that the FX4 (I had an 02) had a bigger caliper. That is your only problem. See if you have the clearance to fit the 16" over the current brakes. If they fit make the change.

Only my 2 cents

All 97-03 F-150 use the same brakes, well 2wd and 4wd are different. 16" wheels fit just fine, but not 15". Make sure you research those prices beause I find that 265/75R16 cost abotu the same as 265/70R17.

What tires are you looking at getting?

Some tires arent a whole lot more expensive when compared to 16" vs 17"...

Not to mention, any money you save going to 16" tires would (probably) be wasted on the new wheels...

But in any case, you can fit 16" wheels with no problem.

I would like to buy 16" rims because there is a bigger selection of tires and wheels for that size. I will buy 17" if the 16" dont fit but I think they will. I'm not to worried about the extra money being spent on the wheels at all. Thanks for the advice though. It was helpful.

I got my tires for 104 apiece from Discount. Ask them to work with you and they will.

my truck has the stock 16's but according to the door jamb sticker, it came out of the factory with 17's. something i cant figure out. did they put the 17's on 98 models? i look up tire sizes by vehicle year make and model at work and it doesn't pull up 17's for 98. all it pulls up is 235/70/16 and 255/70/16 for 98.

The Off-Road Package put 17" wheels on the trucks. Although its odd that you have 16" wheels when it says you have 17" on the sticker.

mine does have the off road package so i guess that explains why the sticker says 17's. the only thing i can figure out is maybe whoever owned it before me put the 16's on it to save money on tires.

Ah, I thought you bought it new.
Then yes, the previous owner put 16"s wheels on it.
