Question 35's on 04'?

I have a 2004 fx4 supercrew. with a 2.5" leveling kit will it clear 35's on the stock wheels? I want the agressive look, but cant afford a 4 or 6" lift....... stupid truck payments.....
If not what is the biggest tire I can fit?

Thanks,
f150's rock

A couple of guys in the 04-05 forum are running 35"s with just a leveling kit but I believe that it takes a little bit of trimming of the fender wells to not rub. I think it also makes a difference if you go to a less aggressive tread, such as an all terrain instead of a mud terrain.

I don't think you will have to trim at all if you go with a 35x12.50. You will probably have to trim if you go with a wider tire like a 325/65-18 (35x13.50)

It seems like every post I read here about tire fittment only takes into account the truck's body and such. I don't see any discussion of wheel width. I don't have an F150 yet, but wheel width info is usually difficult to find. I'm guessing that they are only 7 - 7.5" wide.

Usually 8" is the minimum width wheel you want to run with a 12.5" wide tire. Some people get away with narrower rims, but I think it looks a bit goofy and definitely isn't as safe.

For a 13.5" wide tire, I wouldn't even think about a sub-8" rim. Not even for a second. In that case, fender trimming is the least of your concerns.

So, two questions:

1) What is the stock width on F-150 trucks?
2) Are you just assuming that anyone who puts these after-market tires on their truck would get an >8" wide after-market wheel?

This is of interest to me, because I'm looking at the King Ranch. I would want to maximize tire size, but I want to keep the stock rims. Tire height is easy to fit. Lifts, trimming, etc is all doable. Tire width is difficult -- I doubt you could order King Ranch F-150 wheels in 18x10 dimensions!

Thanks.

The 04-05 F-150's come with 17x7.5 and 18x8.5 inch wheels. The 97-03 F-150's came with 16x7 and 17x7.5 inch wheels. Yes, most tire manufacturers recommend an 8 to 10 inch wide wheel for 12.50 section width tires. No a 7.5 inch wheel is not ideal, but it is far from unsafe.

We have done several 2.5" kits on our 04/05's and we decided on 285/75/17 BFG Mud T/A's (33.0") for several reasons. The tread pattern offers a great style and look, they are relatively inexpensive, are designed for a 7.5" rim, are about 4% taller than the largest factory tire that allows easy recalibration of the speedo which maintains decent fuel mileage and performance. The larger tire would impact performance (acceleration) and fuel economy and in the Mud Terrain tread would rub on the fender linings. If you want style at an affordable price, the slightly smaller Mud Terrains are much more attactive than the All terrain 35" in my opinion. I have a pic in the gallery of Ranchero PKG with those tires

I've got a 2.5 autospring lift on my truck with 35/12.5/18 toyo open country mt's on my stock rims and they fit fine. They DO NOT rub the fender lining at all. The aggresive pattern makes them touch the frame at full lock. But they don't even come close to the fender lining or fender well anywhere. You can easily fit 35's on your stock rim with a leveling kit. I bet you could almost throw 37's under there. I have a couple of pics in my gallery. They aren't the greatest pics but there is some.
