Better off with A/T or M/T
I will do quite a bit of highway driving as I drive back and forth from college but I also do TONS of hunting and fishing throughout the year and my hunting property is a pretty remote area. This is pretty much the only time I need an agressive off-road tire because it is about a mile drive to the gate and then through the gate it has some pretty bad ruts due to the tanker trucks that go back through there and pump oil. The roads only get really bad after it has rained and the mud is probably an average of 4-6" deep the whole way. Would I be better off with a mud terrain or an all terrain? Only thing I worry about with the all terrain is can they make it through the roads?? And then with the mud terrains are they suitable for all the highway driving and then Ive also read about how they arent all that great in rain. Any one have any suggestions???

A BFG AT will most likely go through what you're looking at and still get 40-50k on the highway. Some people have had bad luck, but many more have had good luck. The BFG MT will definetly go through that kind of mud, but the onroad probably won't be a long. I myself would run the Goodyear MTR. Mine were great offroad traction wise and they have about 50k on them with about another 10k left. They were quiet and rode well going down the road. The only problem is they're expensive, but you get what you pay for. I'm still tempted to get them for the F250, but I'm still trying to swallow the price again.

Is there any performance difference between the 285/70/17 tires and the 275/70/17 tires? If there isn't muc performance difference I might as well go with the cheapest version I can get. Also, do the MTR's perform well in rain? I've heard from a bunch of people that the BFG M/T's are not too impressive in the rain and are downright dangerous on ice. How do the Goodyears compare to this?? Thanks

Can you even get a 275/70/17? Thats not a very common size. You won't see a huge difference between the 2 sizes. The latter is slightly shorter and narrower. The 275/70/17 is a 32.2"x10.8", the 285/70/17 is a 32.8"x11.2" tire.
As for the MTRs I never had a problem with traction in rain or wet conditions. I didn't drive it ALOT on ice as its been mild winters here since I had them on. I did see a SD today with 265/75/16 MTRs on it today and I'm almost sold on them again. I just have to completely convince myself to shell out the $700 for them. They have been by far the best tire I've ever run. I don't need an MT tire on my SD as I don't offroad it, but they did such a good job on the road I'm actually looking at them over ATs.

Not too many offer a 275/70/17 tire but Goodyear offers the Wrangler MTR in 275/70/17. I think I am leaning towards the MTR's in the 275/70/17's jsut because of what I have heard from everyone with them. I'm also just not impressed with a tire such as the BFG M/T that is said to be horrible in rain and ice, although most trucks do not do so well in ice anyways. But the rain part is what turns me away the most. Now all I have to do is make myslef shell out the $700-800 for the tires. Anyways, thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

if you dont mind paint chips along the bottom of your truck get the AT's. They hold rocks!!! Had 2 sets of BFG AT's on a Toyota and a ZR2, and the bottom of the truck looks like it was peppered with a bb gun. I'd stick with MT's. Have them... love them EVEN in the RAIN!!!! thats my 2 cents

I rarely hear anyone who owns BFG A/t or M/T's say anything bad about them. Ididn't buy them because they did not look agressive for me. My ford is my daily driver, my 83 blazer is my offraoder and beater. I just bought a set of procomp Xterrains 35x12.5x15 and ABSOULTLY LOVE them. I tried them out in hollister hills through mud, rocks and steep climbs, they worked great!
give them a look at if you want. I paid 185 apiece for 35's
