17x9 too wide for stock?

I'm hoping wandell or some other wheel expert can help me out here, I'm having a bit of a dilemma.

A month ago I ordered some wheels from Centerline direct.
They sent 2 out for chroming, and today they telephoned me and said they turned out like crap and that I'm better off selecting another wheel.

They offered me a wheel I really like, but they are wider than what I wanted.
They are 17x9 with 4 and a half inches of backspacing.

I really like these wheels, but I don't want to get them if they will stick out too much, or like like ***.

So my question....
would a 17x9 be fine for my truck without a lift, or would I run into any problems?
I do plan to get a suspension lift eventually, but just not right now.
My factory wheels are 17x7.5 I think, and if I go with the new rims, I was planning on buying the same tire size (265/70/17) so that my speedo doesnt change, also this way I won't have to get my chip reprogrammed.

What you guys think, can a 17x9 be ok with stock tire size and no lift?
Anyone have any photos of how it might look?

Thanks
Habibi

The 17x9 will be a little too wide for a 265/75/16 tire. The widest I would attempt would be an 8" wheel. This would be similar to running a 10" wheel with 12.5" wide tires. I know Wandell is running 10" wheels with 285s, but IMO thats pushing it. I used to work in a tire store and I don't feel that its safe so I don't recommend it. The 9" wheel you're looking at with 265s is the same situation. The bead won't seat properly and you run a higher risk of poping the bead off since the tire must balloon out to meet the wheel. I would look for an 8" wide wheel at the widest with those tires. If you were to run a 285 then you could eek by with it, but I'd still be a little wary of them. With that much backspacing the tires won't stick out TOO much farther than stock. As I recall stock is a shade over 4" of backspacing.

powerstroke, thanks for the reply.
I am buying new rubber for the new wheels anyway, I can get any size, but I would have preferred to get stock size if that option was available to me.

With that in mind, what tire size would you recommend for these new rims, without me having to lift the truck.

Thanks

Habibi, when you say stock size do you mean tire diameter? I'm guessing that's what you mean so as not to mess up the speedo calibration. If so you can go wider and still retain the same diameter.

If you want to keep the speedo stock without adjusting it then you'll need to stick with the 265/70/17 or get 265/75/16. If you stick with 17s then the width will not change it. All the width does is designate which tire widths will fit. The speedo just goes off of the tire diameter, so as long as you keep the same diameter the width won't matter. For yours I would go with either a 17x8 or 17x7. If you want to go with wider tires in the future then get the 8s, if you don't want anything wider than a 285 then you can go with 7s. Honestly I would go with the 8s since that will allow you to go as wide as a 305 in the future.

If you like the 17x9's, I would go with them and get a 285/70-17 (33x11.50). The 285's are only gonna be an inch wider and an inch taller than the stock 265/70-17's (32x10.50).

Wandell, will the 285/70/17's fit without a body lift?
I looked through your gallery again, and can't remember if you had a lift when you got the 10 inch wide wheels.

Thanks

I fit 285's on 16x10's by trimming about 1/2 inch of plastic off the front bumper's lower valance. I added the body lift later.
