Question Please help the new guy (me) with some tire/wheel questions..

Hello, I ran across this forum and it looked awesome, so I joined. I have a 2003 F-150 XLT FX4, SuperCab. I am looking to put on a 3" body lift and I was wondering, should I go with 305/7017 ; 33/12.5/17 or 315/70/17???? Should I stay with stock rims or go with some 17X10? I want the tires to stick out some and not stay completely under truck. How much rougher will it ride with the body lift? Are the 33/12.5/17 wider than the 305/70r/17, what about the 315?? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your in luck. This is a great message board and you should receive lots of comments. Also, try the search button to research earlier discussions on this same topic. I'm a fairly new member and found the information on this site invaluable for making decisions on modifications to make to my truck.

If you are budget minded, try calling your local Hummer dealership and see if they will sell you some stock BFGs off of an H2. The H2 comes with BFG AT KOs at 315/70/17. Many buyers want the larger 20" or 22" rims with low profile tires. So, the dealership replaces the rims and tires and ends up with many of these stock H2 wheels sitting in their parts department. You may get an awesome price on a set of these and this may help you make your decision. I've heard of prices as low as $50 to $80 a tire. With the money you save on tires you can purchase your body lift and a microtuner.

I just put a 3" Performance Accessories Body Lift on my 2003 Fx4 SCrew with a set of these tires on my stock rims. I also added the 1715 Microtuner to recalibrate the speedometer and the transmission shift points. I've only run one tank of gas through the truck so far. So, I don't know much about the effect on mileage but so far so good. I can tell you that the truck drives much larger but the ride is pretty much the same. I did not crank the torsion bars so that may account for the ride staying fairly smooth. See the post 315/70/17s Fit? Mileage? for more information.

Good luck!

Thanks, anyone else? If I stay with stock rims, will the tires be offset from under the truck, or will they stay under the truck? Should I go with 17x10 or 17x9 rims if I change. Should I adjust the torsion bar? Any help is greatly appreciated.

As far as the metric tire sizes you mentioned, they work out to convert as approximately:
305/70-17+34x12.50
315/70-17+35x12.50
If you want a wider stance and the tires to "stick out" a little, go with a 17x10 inch rim. Heres a pic of my screw from the front. I have a 3 inch body lift and 285/75-16 (33x11.50) BFG AT KO's on 16x10 Eagle Alloy's with 4 1/2 inches of backspacing and the edge of the front tire/wheel is just about even with the outer edge of the fender flares.
