"It's 6 exactly, no more no less. It will put it right in the middle where it should be."
Not exactly, it is 6 to 6.5 qts. Where it should be is anywhere from min. to max.
Does anybody run their coolant between min. and max., their brake fluid between min. and max., thier clutch fluid (manual) between min. and max., steering fluid between min. and max.? Nope they are all to the full line. Nothing wrong with running your oil to the full line and it is the best place for it to be.
Don't take me wrong, not getting on anyones case but that is why the stick has a mark on it for min. and for max. The motor will use some oil, alot do and some don't. Mine don't use much at all, about less then 1/4 qt for 3,000 miles (truck has 28,900 miles). So unless you check your oil often I would not recommend anyone putting in only enough to meet the min. or the middle of the stick. You have to figure. depending on miles if you use more then just 1/2 qt before you change your oil, and your oil is only at the middle of the min. and max. you may very well be low on oil by the time you change it and that could mean BIG bucks, or alot more wear on the engine then needed. All because someone wanted to save a few bucks on 1 qt of oil.
It's your truck do as you please, for me it is to the full line and checked at every gas fill-up.
I should have added that on mine and all the 4.2 and 4.6 I know of take 6.5qts to get it to the full line. That is with a new oil filter of which you should ALWAYS do at every oil change. Remember after you add about 5qts you should start the truck let it run for about 5 mins. check for leaks then shut it off. give it a min or two for the oil to run back down to the pan then check the stick and fill to the full line.
If you don't start the truck, let it run, then shut it off to check, the oil dip stick reading will be wrong, especially with a new filter on.

can't believe i am touching this one!
according to the manual in the middle of the hash marks is considered FULL not at the max line.
6.5 qts is fine and shouldn't hurt a thing, nor will just 6 qts.
i however do not recommend putting in 5 qts then starting the engine! i don't understand the theory here??? not one of you on this board would ever run your engine a qt to a qt and half low! in addtion running the engine with only 5 in will cause wear and foaming (if if the engine is just run 5 min)
put in 6 like the manual says then start, idle, off, sit a spell, then check, adjust if needed to your liking.
no flame just my .02-
be careful out there

HCMQ, I agree, the manual says 6 qts for a reason. I drive a 2001 4.2 and my wife drives a 2002 4.6, both get 6 qts, (Royal Purple with a Mobile 1 filter). The level on the dipstick is supposed to be about in the middle (I read why somewhere but cant remember where).
I remove the filter, (on the 4.6 turn the wheels to the left first to get the filter clear), drain the oil, put on the new filter, put plug back in oil pan, start the engine and let it idle, watch under the truck for any leakage, especially where the filter screws in. Then put the tools up and drink a Miller Lite!
