Have you noticed any difference in performance or smoothness with the Mobil 1 5W30. Iv'e always used Mobil 1, but not convinced yet that it's safe where 5W20 speced. I have several 5qt bottles of Mobil1 5W30 in the garage. I emailed Mobil1 and they said they will have a 5W20 synthetic in the spring. I know Amsoil has 5W20.
Thanks

Pete,
I hope its safe....the first three oil changes on my screw the dealer used 10W30 instead of the 10W20. When I asked about this they told me that the spec was for C.A.F.E. numbers only, the motor hadn't changed from the previous year, just the oil spec.

10;30 VS 10;20
Your dealer is correct. The CAFE numbers are the only reason FORD and HONDA ( so far) went to the 5W20. The numbers for CAFE come from the OVERALL total mileage avg. of a manufacturer.
So, the engineers say, if we use 5W20 in all of our vehicles and gain an average .01358 mpg multiplied by X,000's, that would give our number rating a boost towards the Clean Air Act and CARB standards and we get a $$ bonus ! Hey , let's do it !!
And that's how sh*t happens at the big round table in Detroit.....

Not to beat a dead horse, but..
While it may benefit CAFE #'s, nobody, and I mean nobody, on this board, or any other that I have seen has documented 5w20 decreasing engine longetivity. Even the oil analysis that I have seen on engines running 5w20 have been as good or better than those running 5w30. The jury is still out on that point.
And if your dealer is using 10w30, they still wouldn't be meeting earlier recomendations, which was 5w30 for these motors.

Glad to hear about your dealer experience. I read the posting from Amsoil about the CAFE thing for 5W20. I guess I'll use the 5W20 I have then go to Mobil1.
Thanks

Pete,
Mobile 1 5w-30 is a great oil. My father has been using it in his 4.6 for well over 90,000 mi. with no problems. He has over 160,000 mi. on his truck now. I've been using the Redline 5w-30 on my 2001 4.6 for about 10,000 mi. and love it. You can throw the stuff in the engine and feel confident that the oil has not thermally degraded after 5,000 mi. I'm not an expert, but oil viscocity especially the first number ( eg. 5W or 10W) refers to the pumpability in harsh winter temps. The second number is the running temp visco. There has been a long debate reg. 5w-20 oil. Personally, the oil is a little to thin for my taste ( prob for CAFE). Also, just recently they switched to 5w-20. since 97 Ford has been suggesting 5w-30 in their 4.6 and 5.4's. I think anyone will tell ya it's comes down to your personal choice. Just use a good quality oil ( you can't go wrong with mobile 1).
good luck!
