Question 4.6 4x4 fuel economy

i have a 97 f150 4.6 4x4 and am only getting about 11 mile to the gallon. i do have 33 inch tires and a 3:55 gear but i think it could get better than that, any ideas? would a jet chip help or hurt fuel economy?

I don't know about the jet chip, but.. I got a superchip last fall, and my mileage only went up.

I have the 5.4 Supercab 4x4 and am averaging 14.7mpg since the truck was new. I recently installed a Superchips and the mileage seems to have improved. But then my mileage was always 1.0 to 1.5 mpg better when I used premium fuel, even without the chip.

I have a 2001 SuperCrew 4X4 with a 5.4 in it. I just filled up today and recorded the highest M.P.G. I have ever had. About 6 months ago I put a SuperChip, Catback exhaust and an AirForce 1 on all at the same time. My mileage went from 14.6 to a high of 18.4. With the A/C on it dropped down into the low 17's throughout the summer. Since that time I've put electric fans, shift kit and an underdrive pulley set on. The weather has turned here the last week, cooler and a lot of rain. I haven't been running the A/C and I put on primarily road miles. I filled up today and had run 373 miles on 19.1 gallons. That figures out to be 19.5 M.P.G. I almost can't believe it but couldn't be happier.

Holy *****, that mileage is great, I wish I could get that. I could spend all the saved gas money on more stuff for my pickup.

On average 13 or 14 mpg in town and 18-19 on the highway. Have had low 20's on the highway a couple of times but not often.

In winter cut those in half

1997 F-150 4x4 EC 4.6A 3.55LS LT 245/75 R16

Mileage sucks but love the truck. Next one will be a Superduty with a diesel.

What sucks about that kinda mileage???? Low 20's?? I couldn't even get that if I was being pulled on a trailer, by a superduty w/ a stroker

It all depends on how far you push the peddle!!!

Mine is always to the floor until I get on the freeway. I try to cruise around 80 and I get about 13 to 14 on the freeway. I get about 11 in town. But I drive it that way!

Once I got about 18 but I hated driving that slow! I think it was about 55! It was the speed limit all the way there, but it seemed so slow!!!

Yeah I hear ya Blue Farmer

Overall the mileage isn't bad but it sure would be nice if the could squeeze a 2-3 more MPG out of the engines. Most of my driving on the hwy is around 60-65 . . . it starts to get worse faster than that.

In town, seems like no matter how I drive it I still get 13-14 MPG. I'll take that milegae over having to drive a Chevy Cavilier

That being said, once winter hits below -15 C or -20 C I don't even want to start my truck . . . the mileage is frightening!!!

Thats is the kind of crap that Ford and GM are about to lose their asses ...Stupidity...How it is possible that they are not able to increase the mileage on their engines ...I do have a f150 4x4 5 speed and I am able to get 21 mpg on the freeway....

I agree. The 33's are killing you and gears would probably help the most. I'm running a 1999 F150 Flareside 4.6l 4X4 AUTO 3.55's with 255/70R/16 tires, Ford Racing Lightning style exhaust (made by Borla), ASP pulleys, AF1 intake, Accel coil packs, FMS 9mm plug wires, Motorcraft plugs AGSF22FM, FAL 270 fans, Mobil 1 Synthetic 5-30. I'm getting 18-19 mpgs and I can honestly say I saw the biggest mpg improvement with the ASP pulleys (about 1.5 mpgs...roughly $200) and the VMP tuning (1.5-2 mpgs...roughly $400).
