Question How to identify a 428 FE v.s. a 352/390 block

I know this seems a little prehistoric relative to the other modern F-150 posts, but I'm looking at finding a regular 428 short block to replace my 390. I know the 428 is just a bored and stroked 390 block, but how would you identify one at a wreckers etc? I assume by the block I.D. number.

Isn't there any nostalgia fans out there?? There's lots of FE heritage in the F-100/F-150, consisting of the early 60's to mid 70's era of the F-truck. Anyone have any knowledge pertaining to this era?

I remember coming across a site for classic Ford's using a search engine called google www.google.com . I don't remember the site address but maybe that will help. Also, try this site - http://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/97up/229.html & www.macsauto.com where you can order a free catalog specific to your vehicle.
Hope this helps! You can find me in chat every night so if you need more suggestions, catch me there after 9 or 9:30 DST. Bye!

If I remember correctly, all 427/428 blocks had 4-bolt mains. They had a different way of using 4 bolts on the main caps-2 of the bolts went through the side of the block. you can see this by looking at the side of the block. As far as I know none of the 390's had this setup. Good luck in finding one!!

Pick up a copy of HP Books "How to Rebuild Your 352-428 Ford" It has all the casting numbers for the various parts and lots of other good info. I believe Ford quit using the 428 in 1967 when the 429 came out in 1968. Look for a 67 or earlier Thunderbird, Lincoln or other large Ford car. You can also mix and match crank, rods and pistons to make a 406, 410 or 428. The HP book will tell ya what works. Good luck finding a 428. They are rare. also check out www.ford-trucks.com

Yes it will take casting numbers to ID the block.
Only the 427 side oiler blocks had 4 bolt mains.
The 428 continued into the 70 Mustangs

And the book you want is High Performance Fords. It's paperback and has 4 pictures of Ford engines on the cover.

Thanks guys! Redflare5.4, that High Performance Fords is a great book. I do have it, and read it yesterday. Except they don't mention anything about identifying the casting number on a 428 block. And my brother does have that book "How to Rebuild Your 352-428 Ford", but I keep forgeting to ask to borrow it again to look it up! Yeah, only the side-oiler 427 had the crossbolt mains. I sort of forgot about www.ford-trucks.com . I originally was looking into swapping my crank out with a 428 crank, except it requires purchasing 428 pistons that are shallower then the 390's, but the rods are atleast the same. I rather find a pre-assemble short block 428 that doesn't require any machining, and then I can bolt on all my goodies. A 428 crank with 15 over pistons would give me approximately a 414cid I think, which is fairly good, but I'd much rather have a 432cid.

I dont think you'll find a 30+year old shortblock that will not need machining!
You 390 block with the 428 crank 3.98"stroke makes the 410 engine that Ford had in the early60's.rods are all the same length.
Alot of the FE stuff fits everything except for the 427(big bore).
I love the FE engines,I had a 428cj I got from a junkyard in 1981 for $150 with the cj c6 trans!After about a $800 rebuild I put it my 67 Mustang oh what fun!Wish I never sold it.

Now for the present, believe it or not you could stroke a 351w to 392 very easily and put some modern aftermarket heads on it and make more power then the 428 will make for less money.Unless you can get a CJ from somebody for next to nothing. If these are not being collected the NHRA stock racers still pay good money for these parts.
